Kaleido Star, a homage to a series close to my heart. And overcoming some weaknesses. Part II Final?

So last time I showed the roughs for what I was working on. With that done, came putting color. What I’m doing now is seperating the focal point from the background.  This is done so that I can focus on one thing at a time and it makes it easier to draw/paint a background withought worrying of encrouching on the space of the focus (usually the character). It does come with it’s weaknesses though, by not having them together (background and focal point) I can’t merge and control the colors as effectively, at least not at my current level. Once I understand color a bit better I should be ok, we’ll see.

This is the background reference picture, which I got by going through the Legendary Meneauver episode and capturing stills.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35608327751/in/dateposted-public/

And here is what I painted.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35570635282/in/dateposted-public/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35739919955/in/dateposted-public/

The colors came out much smoother and vibrant than with any other watercolors I have used so far. But I still have some more learning to do. I didnt want to add too much contrast yet, seeing as I am still learning. Plus I wasn’t sure if things would have changed as I put the background and the characters together.

Next is painting Sora and Layla.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35570726422/in/dateposted-public/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35570726142/in/dateposted-public/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35570725832/in/dateposted-public/

It doesn’t look bad on it’s own, but I didn’t take into account the lighting that would be required from the background. I had to think in terms of blueish tints as opposed to what I had used here. I could have done it traditionally but decided to wait and do it digitally so that I could take my time and learn as I went along.

And fool (a very important, and funny, character in the series), those who saw the series know why he is there.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35742285725/in/dateposted-public/

So this is how it looked like when I tried adding it to the background before trying to match the colors of Sora and Layla with the background. (Note that I did add a bit of more shadows by this point thinking that it could help). I was also experimenting with the sparkles around them  (didn’t really go as planned).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35702583176/in/dateposted-public/

Doesn’t really meld well together, so I went and tried to get them to a closer level.

Made it darker and added some glow around them.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35707963146/in/dateposted-public/

Kept it going, will now show without glow and with glow.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/34907174144/in/dateposted-public/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35707956936/in/dateposted-public/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35617173951/in/dateposted-public/

By this point it was getting close, but I had to push it a little further and actually change colors to their blue counterparts (if that even makes sense).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/34939511643/in/dateposted-public/

By this point I have two options, go with the darker one or the one with more light. I still haven’t decided which one to use yet. And on top of that I want to make something a little different with the drawing of Sora and Layla by adding a totally different background and maybe even changing the paint on them too.

On top of that, I also changed the position of Laylas arm since it looked a little too still where it was originally.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35617819221/in/dateposted-public/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/34939515893/in/dateposted-public/

I feel like the background is still too dark, maybe adding a light haze like in the reference picture might make it better. I’ll have to try and see if it makes a good difference. I’m still unsure of how it looks, I wonder what other people think.

But for now it is done. I will have to think it over for a little while if I will leave it as is or make some changes.

Kaleido Star, a homage to a series close to my heart. And overcoming some weaknesses. Part I

I believe it was back when I was in late middle school when I first came upon the series (Kaleido Star). By that point I had seen quite a couple of anime series and had started to develop my tastes. This was a series I couldn’t get enough of. The characters, animation, story, music, athmosphere and themes all pulled me in. It also helped that I was really into Cirque du Soleil at the time (I never went to an actual show, but I did rent the dvds to see the performances). It had that typical 2000s look to it, when animation was starting to move towards digital coloring which (those from that era) tend not to age well. But despite that, the series was stylized in a way that stands up even today. I want to talk more about it, but I will leave that for a later project. If anything I just wish to say, if you haven’t seen it yet, watch it. I highly recommend it.

This is the anime I’m talking about.

The main character Sora Naegino.

With that said, I hope it’s clear that this series holds a special place in my heart. So I hoped to make a piece based on it. After much thought I wanted to do a drawing of the “The Legendary Great Maneuver”. I won’t say too much for the sake of those who haven’t seen the series, but it is a moment that packs a punch of emotions.

I’m still trying out the digital and traditional blending of techniques where I do something traditionally and add to it digitally. This time though I am also using p.h. martins radiant water colors. They are quite amazing. But I have noticed that despite this, watercolors are still watercolors so if I don’t master the balance of color and light I won’t have a good picture if I were to do it completely traditionally.

My main problem is trying to do it exactly as I see it. It sound right in my head, but when I do it on paper… it just doesn’t work. I use too many colors and and it ends up looking, well dirty, muddled. In essence not good. Heck, too much work on it actually makes it look faded instead of vibrant which is what I’m aiming for. Having failed countless times, now that I see other’s work I see that they use the technique of fading the background and only adding more vibrant colors to the focal point (usually the character) on the page. This is even done on digital mediums.

I’m sorry, it seems I can’t embed the image here. I tried and it either doesn’t show the image or plain adds a 401 forbidden messege. So I will just leave the links for those who are still curious about what I’m talking about below, if not then just skip this short section.

Artist: YUU菊池(岩佐有祐)(can be found on pixiv)

Notice how the area surrounding the main focal point (the little witch) has more color and detail, while the surrounding areas don’t. Yet it all blend well together.

link to Image.

One of my biggest weaknesses are when backgrounds are dark or require other types of lighting other than a brightly lighted background (where the colors are basic and don’t require much thought on color variation and shadows).

Artist: Stu_dts (can be found on pixiv)

link to image:

This is a great example of what I mean. Notice how the colors on the subject changed in response to the background. Isolating the character would problably look weird in a white background but blends quite well here.

https://source.pixiv.net/source/embed.jsThe Sun Never Sets by Stu_dts on pixiv

So in the situation of doing it all traditionally, I wan’t a dark background but don’t want to add too much color either for fear of doing what I explained before. On top of that, when the athmosphere color changes, one’s subject has to change in turn as well so that it melds well together with the background. That’s where one of my weaknesses shows up, I’m afraid of changing skin colors. I’m so unused to it that it doesn’t feel natural when I notice that it’s supposed to be a shade of blue, red, orange, yellow etc. With that in mind i decided to try it out on this piece. I need to get over this weakness so that I can grow and draw/paint faster instead of doubting my eyes and overthinking things.

Luckily with digital I can try as many times as needed till I get it right. And try I did.

Now, before I continue. I’m adding a whole background on my current artwork, but many artists don’t even bother. Sometimes just adding a quick and undetailed or even unfinished background is enough. By doing this, the range of possible colors that the main focal point can achieve without looking out of place increases. But, I wan’t to understand how color works with each other and how that changes in respect to one another. Although it takes me a long time to do, I feel it will be best in the long run since I will be able to understand how color works in different situations. I do worry since I don’t have much time left.. but I think I can get to understand it soon. The further one goes ahead, the more one realizes how much one lacks and still has to learn. I’ve heard others say this growing up, and I’m really starting to understand that more and more these days.

I don’t want this to be too long, so I will divide it into parts (how many, I don’t know). But anyway here are the outlines of what I started with.

I actually wasn’t too sure how I wanted to go about things, till I saw this picture when looking for references. Once I saw it, I knew I had to do “The Legendary Great Maneuver”:

Honedge pretty much finished

I guess this wasn’t as tough as I thought it was going to be. Over all it was just a matter of making the scabbard part of it constructed with enough space for it to go in but also keep it in as well. The shape, sanding and finishing touches were all done a long time ago, but I was told to wait on the paint job. So it has been sitting there for quite some time.

But I was finally able to work on it again and finish it. This process isn’t hard, though it does take time to paint in parts since it will have different colors in sections. This process takes time since one has to cover the areas that will be a different color. Then one has to let it dry properly before adding a different coat. Depending on the weather this can take a day or two before doing more serious things. I will admit that I made a couple of mistakes choosing the right color combinations. In the end I had to try out a new technique where you slowly add a separate color to create a different tone. Surprisingly it was much easier than I thought it was  going to be. I remember trying something similar with my keyblades and really struggling to get it right.

Applying the glass eye. Worked quite well. Only time will tell if it stays witout falling off (though this stuff is tough so I doubt it).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35538498046/in/dateposted-public/

It turned out great, and to think I found this glass piece on a job site just laying there by the trash. It turned out to be the right shape, size and was in a good enough shape that I could still use. I truly got lucky.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/34768509763/in/dateposted-public/

I had several types of silver paint, some were rather opaque but there was one that really had a shine to it. It looked amazing in the sun and where there were different type of light sources, so I used that one.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/35409343272/in/dateposted-public/

But I noticed that the paint on the blade kept getting scrapped off by the scabbard. So I decided to add some varnish.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/34768507203/in/dateposted-public/

Due to that though, I lost all the shine.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/34768504603/in/dateposted-public/

What I decided to do was to add silver paint without varnish to the sharp part of the blade. This would give it a more detail and accent the lines of the blade.

Sorry I forgot to take photos of it without the tape. But I did take video of it (I’m pretty sure). Anyway, here it is. All finished. All together with the scabbards final color scheme (again, sorry for not having pictures of the sword and scabbard seperate… or I guess I can screenshot them…).

I was actually considering just leaving the bade as it was, but I’m glad I decided to paint the edges. It gave it a good look.

Of course all that’s left now is the sash, but that shouldn’t be a problem.

What I have learned is that most people won’t buy something made out of wood for a good price. They want something more on the affordable side. The amount of time and work one puts in is not something most people think of, and competing with factory made prices makes it even harder. I guess I will go the Japanese route of making props for cosplay and delve into making things with foam board and similar materials. It seems to be much simpler and quicker to work with. Though, I think I will make props just for myself and focus on the drawing side of things to offer customers.

Next time I wan’t to talk about two pieces that I have finished.

What have I been working on?

Well after the last convention I started to see all my weaknesses and decided to go ahead and focus on getting my skills stronger and at a higher level. Although I feel like my drawing skills have reached a good level, in the end if I produce a poor coloring job it will ultimately bring down the quality of the work completely. Every potential of what that drawing could acheive  will suddenly disappear. In the end, that coloring job could just completely destroy it all and end up a mediocre mess. Which is sadly what happened to my work (or at the very least most of it).

So on top of making my drawings better, I have to put a great emphasis on how color works as well as the utilization of light and darkness. Most of my earlier work had to do with black and white only. Of course I was influenced by manga and that type of artwork. I learned quite a lot doing that, but I completely neglected color. And now I am struggling to get a hold of it now… Not that I can really be surprised by it though, I saw art as just a hobby and only thought of it as something I would do for my self. The idea of doing it as a career was something I really didn’t see my self doing at all. The closest I ever got was thinking of being a photographer, and even then…

Well you reap what you sow. Now I have to pick up the slack and really focus my efforts into it. Fffhhhmmm… Looking back just a couple of years ago after high school when I began thinking of becoming an artist, not even then I put the effort to really take color seriously. I felt it would be something I would pick up quickly. But as time would soon let me know, that wasn’t the case. I tried developing new techniques but they all seemed to produce very rough and mediocre results. I also had my ego get the best of me. I forced my self not to see what others were doing in order to get the understanding of it all on my own. I wanted to be completely self-taught. That… was stupid. Time is precious and reinventing techniques that have already been invented is simply quite stupid. I don’t have time to wasted anymore. I have to push forward and prove to my self that my work is actually worth investing my time, efforts and future into. Because let’s face it, if I can’t sell my work then I should just find a new profession. As much as it is nice to say that I should be making art only for my sake, that doesn’t provide a chance to live in this type of world. I need to make it viable.

This year I’m really pushing forward trying to achieve my goals. I started my own business, I attended my first conventions (though they did end up in failure) and experimented on what kinds of things potential customers will want. The piñata was a total failure… The quality I fell was there, but the price and actual product kept people away. of What use is a  piñata going to be to the average consumer? I was warned that I would fail for all the reasons that the people at the convention made very clear. So even though I did definitively learned that it wouldn’t work, it was at the cost of very precious time that I could have used to work on other activities like getting better with coloring and drawing.

One thing I learned at the conventions was that most of the anime I tend to gravitate towards doesn’t have a big following at these conventions, and if you do find someone they may not have any money to buy anything or not even find your work to be worth it. With that in mind I have to make sure to offer work that is popular but of course that I also like my self. I don’t like doing work (unless commissioned of course) of things I don’t know anything about since I like to make my work reflect on the series by adding a story to it that fits.

I guess, there lies another problem. My consists of a a story or theme that those who see it will perceive, but not everyone really cares for this. Many people sometimes only care about the character, the theme and background are all really not that important. Only the better artists (compared to me anyway) can pull what I’m trying to pull off right. Most art I see at conventions are quite simple and showcase the characters in either some inside joke, meme or of course fan-service… But I wan’t to be good enough to not rely on that (even though this is what customers want… so really what I’m doing is completely due to my selfishness). One thing to keep in mind is tha no background give one the chance to produce more works since doing a background takes a lot of time, especially if it’s done traditionally. But I feel I should keep doing backgrounds and get better at them even if I end up not using them later one because it will help with me getting better as an artist. So despite all the reasons against it I will continue forward with making them.

One of the first things I did when the convention ended was practice digital painting for about a month (one of the reasons I was absent here for so long). I wanted to finally sit down and learn how to use my bamboo tablet. It took a while but I started to get the hang of it and also picked up shortcuts on the keyboard along the way which sped up the workflow by a large margin. My painting style is still very much based on traditional techniques so I had a hard time. It’s doable but to make the transitions from one color to another is something I have to work on.

What I have developed is a traditional and digital approach where I do as much as I can traditional and then finish it up digitally. I have decided to cut as much of physical media away from what I will offer clients to make it easier and also more cost effective. This way I don’t have to worry the client with shipping fees and whatnot (physical copies will still be available for those interested and other physical items will aso be available as I produce them, it will become more clear what I’m talking about when I actually show you some other time). What I mean by this is selling digital copies of my work instead of physical prints. Don’t know if this will work, but time will tell.

I plan to produce Youtube videos again, but that will have me making them over the coming months and then posting them in a somewhat stable schedule. But I wan’t to make high quality content that also integrates other things to my format that I currently have. That with me actually producing quality artwork will take time. So when I will be uploading these videos is still unclear, but I hope it will be worth the wait.

On top of that I have also started drafting the book I have been planning to work on since I was in high school. I have enough ideas, notes and experiences to go ahead and start working on it. as I continue working on it I’m sure my drawing skills and storytelling skills willl increase alongside it. When I have enough good material I will make sure to update you guys on it.

Well those have been my activities and thoughts recently, I will upload some of the work I have worked on and have been working on at a later date so you guys get a tasted of what I’m currently developing. That’s quite a lot of projects I have going on huh? Some harsh times fast approach but it’s not something I will shy away from. I’ll continue pushing forward and make this all something I accomplish.

Sorry for the long post. (wonder if anyone will read it to it’s entirety?)

Hasta la proxima.

The start of Youtube videos and Advertisements

I have started working on some new content for my Youtube Channel. I will be doing quite a few different things though, so they will take a while to edit and whatnot. I don’t plan on releasing them anytime soon though. Or at least the new format. I will upload the old format on my second channel for those who need or prefer it that way.

Misaka Mikoto is the first one to be drawn and recorded this year. But I still haven’t decided if she will be the first video to be uploaded. I want to make a good amount of videos to create a backlog of them that way I can upload them on a set schedule.

I still plan on making a background for it though, so it isn’t fully finished yet.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/32645279133/in/dateposted-public/

I’ll be opening up an Etsy shop to make it easier for you guys to purchase things. But I plan to make some advertisements first before making it go live. Tht’s what I have been working on recently.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/32616430054/in/dateposted-public/

It still looks quite dark… I’ll have to make some adjustments. Bu in any case it is coming along nicely.

The next convention is almost here already! Next week. So I have to make preperations. I plan on making some artwork to explain my piñata products. In the end I believe marketing played a big role in keeping people from purchasing them. Hopefully this will help.

This was just a small update. Back to work it is.

Hasta la proxima.

My first convention as a vendor: Animeland Wasabi 2017 The aftermath

So, how was my first convention as an artist in artist alley? I sold absolutely nothing… hahahahaha.

Though, I can’t say I’m surprised. I’m already used to it by this point. But from what I heard from other artists, it seems as though I wasn’t the only one. Don’t know if they also didn’t sell or just had poor sales, but it seems I wasn’t the only one struggling. It’s a shame because there was a lot of talent there.

In fact you can check some of their work out here. This link will take you to the Animeland Wasabi page that has all the artist that attended this years convention. They have some info on the artist and some of their art displayed there so you can get a feel for what they have to offer. On top of that they also have links to them in case you wish to contact them or buy from them.

Surprisingly I wasn’t too nervous in the time before or during the convention. Surprising to me since I am rather shy and don’t do that well dealing with large amounts of people. But I’d say I did well. Though I was still quiet, but that is normal of me. If I seemed to quiet, I’m sorry.

I guess I wan’t to talk about a couple of things, so I will break them down into these sections:

– Things I didn’t enjoy

– Why I feel I didn’t sell my art

– Improvements I plan to make

– Positives about the convention

– Any other thoughts (mainly to do with attendees)

So let’s start with the negative because I want to get rid of the worst parts first and have a good feeling afterwords.

Things I didn’t enjoy –

I don’t know if you have heard, but Animeland Wasabi is currently plagued by a bad reputation dealing with some events that happened a while back. Some people I knew even refused to go because of it. So I’d say that had a lot to do with the very low attendance. Though there were people, it was relatively empty. Heck I even have a reference point. I went on 2014 and the convention was a lot fuller and the convention as a whole was a lot more livelier. From what I hear, there has been some changes done to the management to remedy the past though some don’t believe so, thus the low attendance.

Having said that, what do I think? The whole experience with the event organizers was good. As soon as I got there, I was greeted and taken to my table. I was also offered help at any point if I needed it. I really have no complaints. It really is a shame that the event suffered to this extent.

Having that explanation out of the way, I can clearly see why my customer pool was so low. Resulting in no sales.

But the low attendance was not really a problem, I’d say it was more the attitude some people had. And even then it was only four attendees that gave me the stink eye and or made comments about how sneaky I was at pricing my items the way I did.

The main problem I had was the attitude of feeling as though I was taking advantage of them through my prices. My prints were $20 for one or $30 for two. The piñatas were $45 each and the bracelets had different prices ranging from $5 to $15. The prints were priced according to what I had seen in previous conventions. The piñatas were priced accordingly to time spent and detail. Heck if you add them up all together I would only make $360 for a full months work nonstop every day. That’s what people make in a week. The problem here is that art is not really appreciated and taken as seriously as any other job.

When people think of art, they think of the price of the materials and then maybe add 5 or 10 dollars after that for labor. That’s not how it works. There is one, the amount of time that each piece takes to make. Then you have to take into account the quality of the artwork. Art isn’t something that can just be produced like a machine. It takes time, planning, executing and perfecting. If there is one thing I don’t want to do is undersell my work because then other artist have no choice but to do the same and be complacent about being paid next to nothing for the amount of work they put into their craft. I really hope people keep this in mind when buying from an artist.

The only thing I did have that could just be reproduced without much effort were the prints. Once the artwork is finished, which does take time and a lot of work, can be printed into as many prints as one can afford to make. Take note of that. Unless you are ordering crazy amounts of prints of your work, each one can be quite expensive (and that is not taking into account shipping costs). And even then you have to have a good amount of money beforehand to invest in printing that large an amount. Despite that, I decided to price them at the same amount I had seen and have been paying every year I’ve gone to NanDesuKan, $20 dollars. Yet even that seemed to be too pricey for most people. What I quickly noticed was that people were selling their prints at ridiculous prices like 4 prints for $20. I have never seen prints sold that cheaply before. And it wasn’t just one person. Many people were selling them at really low prices. I’m talking about 11×17 inch posters or bigger here. With those prices, it was no wonder I had no chance of competing.

I could have changed my prices on the posters, but decided against it, this is the reason why. One, most people only really cared about my piñatas and two, I decided to just save them for the next convention in March if they didn’t sell (which of course they didn’t).

Now, to make this clear. I don’t blame anyone for not buying at all. I understand, I was a customer before this so I understand the reasoning. Plus, if you don’t have the money, you don’t have the money even if you like the work. Also, if you buy from sellers that have lower prices, one can buy more items and support more artists that way. All I really want people to know is why I priced my items the way I did. I’d rather not sell then undermine the work we as artists make. All I ask is that we are paid fairly. There were ways to remedy this, but more on that later.

Why I feel I didn’t sell my art –

There was really only one person that was constantly selling at all times everyday, and that was the artist that was right in front of me. He also had lower prices, I don’t remember by how much, but I believe at $15… maybe lower? But it wasn’t crazy low, just lower than normal. On top of that, he had a massive amount of prints to choose from. One of the things I noticed was that the booths with large amounts of work to offer attracted more people. Plus his work had artwork of current fanbases like Overwatch and whatnot. He also had a service where he drew any character you asked for in under ten minutes. I’d say he was the most popular by far.

I on the other hand only had 6 different prints to choose from and they are, well pretty obscure to the majority of anime fans. Specially newer fans. So of course my art prints would not really attract much attention. I’d say the most cosplayed  characters by girls were from Love Live and other mainstream anime like SAO and the likes. Shows I really can’t get into or haven’t gotten into because I have already seen other series like them. But that’s the thing. What I like doesn’t really matter, it’s what the customer wants. What’s a rehash or cliche is new to someone else. I remember growing up with anime and then watching the first anime’s to inspire certain ideas (that later became cliche’s in my time growing up). So I have to keep that in mind and be more open minded about new series so that I can cater to the new generation of anime fans, because they will become my customer base.

Of course I don’t have to leave my passion projects. I just need to mix it up a little with other fandoms. There is a reason I usually don’t draw from series I know nothing about but I will get into that at some later time. Just know that my work has to do with an idea and story, I’m not trying to just make a generic pose showcasing the character. This is what I see most artist do now. But seeing as it sells, I can now understand why they decided to go that route. I just refuse to do so.

So that and my prices were to blame for me not selling. It’s a shame, but I apologize to my potential customers for not offering something within your price range. I’ll have to remedy that when I get the chance.

Improvements I plan to make –

Well, I don’t have much money left. Specially since I wasn’t able to sell anything this time so I don’t have many options for the next convention that’s approaching. There are two more items I’m hoping of offering, but I really don’t know if I will be able to offer them or not. It all depends on if I can invest more money into it or not.

For now let’s focus on things I know I will have to offer when I get the chance. Different sizes of prints. Specifically smaller ones. I need to offer smaller items that are less expensive. One of my neighboring tables to the right was selling small prints and print cutouts and was selling quite well. I can’t make a living out of making piñatas, I knew this, and since people aren’t willing to pay $45 dollars for one I have no choice but to simplify them to a point that doesn’t require too much work and thus reduces time to make them. This way I can cut the price down.

One thing I noticed was that the piñata although popular was confusing people and made them apprehensive to buying one. The quality was there, but to buy one and then smash it for that price seemed ludicrous. Of course I knew that. I made them not as a smashing piñata but as a display piece that could also double as a storage device. As soon as I was making my table I knew it would become a problem so I made a sign explaining just that and put it in front of my table. Those who paid attention and actually read it had a chuckle, but most people didn’t bother to read it. Heck a guy was even explaining that to me but as he made one point noticed my sign then read one section, corrected himself then made another comment stopped read another section that answered his concern. He continued this same process for 2 more points he wanted to make and took it all back as he read the note I placed up front. He simply said, “Oh, I guess you put an explanation since you kept getting the same comments and questions”. That wasn’t exactly why I put it up. I already knew the concerns people would have and wanted to make it clear what my really detailed piñatas were made for. In the end, this can be attributed to bad marketing. I already have an idea on how to remedy this. Now it’s just a matter of it working.

Positives about the convention –

Let’s finally talk about the good things since that what we should really focus on. All in all this was a learning experience. I may not have been able to sell, but I did get to test out the waters. People really seemed to be intrigued and attracted to the piñatas as I had hoped. You see, my plan was to have the piñatas attract customers over to my table and then have them look at my other work like the bracelets. But my main focus was to have them look at my prints which is where my art is mainly focused at. And it worked attracting people, but as soon as they saw the prices, well it’s fare to say they were scared away. Many of them didn’t even look at my other offerings. The piñatas stole the show. They were good, too good.

Most of the art I took is already a couple of years old, so it’s not to the best of my abilities. Though I wonder if that is the only problem. I feel it has a lot to do with the fandoms. Most people could probably care less about the series I offered. The only compliments I got were for the piñatas.  And seeing as they are secondary, it’s easy to see that it is a problem.

What’s cool about coming to conventions is that all the vendors are pretty friendly with each other. It’s obvious who are the veterans, they are the most open to helping out the newbies by giving them tips on anything from things one can improve to what conventions one can go to. A lot of them sometimes go from table to table to give encouragement. It’s quite a sight to behold. You could really see the comradery. And truthfully we all needed it.

I had a really nice lady that was selling for the vendors “OrnamentalGlass” which is made up of a duo husband and wife. I believe her name was Marie (at least that’s the way I think  it’s spelled). She stopped by to give me some tips and encourage me. She said she saw great potential in my work and said I should keep going at it. 5 years. She said that if I went at it for 5 years I could have this business be completely viable. 5 years seems like lot though, I wonder if I can shorten the time. Sounds like a challenge to me!

No but really, I am really grateful for her advice. It’s an uphill battle, but it’s one worth doing. She told me of other ways to sell my work, and one of them is using reddit. Something I have to look into.

Any other thoughts (mainly to do with attendees) –

Although the attendance was low, the people who did attend were obviously very invested and have a great love for anime. Most of the attendees looked rather young. Probably in middle and high school. So although others might not attend Wasabi, these new anime fans might be able to bring it back.

Let’s talk about cosplayers.

I wanted to take pictures, but in the end as a vendor I didn’t want to leave my table for long. Though I learned after leaving it a couple of times that it would be ok to do so. Everyone seemed to be pretty cool and well behaved. So I should have been ok going around the convention hall and asking for pictures. Besides it’s not like I would have sold anything anyway. I really regret it now.

It’s an even bigger shame because most of the attendees brought their A game. Were at a point where the U.S. can finally compete with Japanese cosplayers. But I guess that is to be expected. It no longer is like before where one had to go at it blind and learn everything from scratch. Now that we all have free access to the internet, information is much easier to pass along and build upon. Ahhh… I remember when cosplay was in the middle stages of being passable to ok. Now it’s taken to such a high quality that it amazes me.

I guess there isn’t much else to say. The convention as a whole was a great experience, though not selling was a downer and the boredom of just sitting there non-stop for hours does take it’s toll. I’d say those were the worst experiences I had. Hopefully I can turn things around for the next one. And hopefully next time I will actually take some pictures.

Hasta la proxima.

Getting ready for the Anime conventions

It took me quite a couple of years before I decided it was time to go ahead and attend an artist alley. And now that I feel it is time to delve into them I have two right out of the gate at the beginning of the year. I won’t lie, not knowing how things will go is a bit unsettling. I’ve seen people cry when they aren’t selling their work. It’s a lot of pressure one has to feel at such events. After all if one doesn’t sell, what does that tell the artist about their artwork? Having said that, I have tempered myself to criticism and failure since I decided to pursue art as a career. I would’ve given up a long time ago if I wasn’t prepared to fail. Really I’m just glad I was given this opportunity to give it a try. Hopefully things go well and I get my name out there.

On another note I have started preparations to register my business with the state of Colorado. Once I’m approved I will apply for a tax licence which is used, of course, to report earnings and pay taxes. This is all new to me (and to some of you, but worry not I will explain the process when I get approved) luckily I had an old friend from high school who has worked with taxes for a couple of years now and lead me to the right forms to get started. I really can’t thank her enough. She has been helping me out before and since I graduated. I hope I can make it up to her soon.

Aside from that I’ve been working on the products and finally cleaned my room. I have this problem where I get so into something I tend to neglect other things. In the case of working I tend to work non stop but put off cleaning the byproduct of my work that it just leaves my whole room a mess. I tend to clean it once a week, but I may just have to do it twice (by that I mean a deep clean). Having paper scraps and whatnot is quite a hindrance.

That should be all for now. Next time I actually want to show you guys what I plan to sell.

I’m back!

Sorry I disappeared for about what, a month? The last few weeks were quite hectic. I had finals during the beginning of December and truthfully, it was the final project for Japanese class (a language class) that really took quite a bit of my time. We had to create a children’s story and have at the very least 10 pictures to go along with it. I made sure to take care of the actual story first so as to not have problems later, but I failed to take into account the pictures. This became a problem, after all I was planning on drawing them all out.

It was a rather interesting experience since it was a new experience and fun but also quite hard and really stressful. Working on it was making me feel sick throughout the whole experience. I had to work on it as soon as I woke up and took only breaks to take care of things like eating and other living necessities. In a way I got a glimpse at the life of what a mangaka has to go through every single week. And, I seriously have a whole lot of more respect for them. To be fair, the work I did was still mediocre in the end (this is what happens for trying to draw it all in 5 days) but still presentable. What’s funny is that I was planning to color them too. Boy was I wrong!

Anyway, it’s been just a little over a week since I entered winter vacations. Although I did decide to take about five days off to just stop and take a moment to just have fun, I had to quickly get back to work. I do feel bad for not updating this space for this whole time though. I truly apologize. But worry not, since I was documenting my work so that I can speak about it in days to come. I have quite a lot of work that is to come. It’s quite daunting actually, but I’ll make it work.

Next semester I will not be going back to school. I decided to invest my time and money for the sake of artwork. I don’t remember if I already mentioned this before but I have been accepted by two anime conventions at the beginning of the year. They are Anime Land Wasabi and Colorado Anime Fest. I still have to take care of some things so that I can say I will 100% be there (it has to do with taxes, I will explain later since new artist have to know this), but I shouldn’t have any problems taking care of that.

Having said that I am currently working on the products I will have available at my table. I will write about that later. Truthfully I just wanted to give a bit of an update about where I’m at and a little glimpse of what’s to come.

Another year of life (2016)

I’ve made it through another year of life huh? This is the year I was preparing my self for. All the work I have put towards getting better were for this year that has finally come. It’s sink or swim now. Will my efforts bring forth fruit or will I have to deal with a crushing de

feat? That is what I have in store. It’s all a matter of my work from here on out and sadly luck… I don’t like leaving things to chance, but that seems to be a factor as well. All I can do is go at it with everything I have and work towards the best. Whether that will be rewarded is still yet to be seen.

Speaking of which I have some news… I got a table at one of the anime conventions next year. This one is for Wasabi. I’m a little nervous, but we’ll see how it all goes. Still haven’t heard from Colorado Anime Fest. They were supposed to let the applicants know by the 31st, but still no response. I wonder if they only contact the applicants that got a table? Oh well. This is one step closer to see what happens with my art in this type of setting.

November 2nd is “El Dia de los Muertos” (day of the dead) in Mexico. It’s a holiday very much like the OBon festival in Japan. It’s a time of celebration where we go to the cemetery to clean and remember our past loved ones. It is said that this is the one time a year when they (the spirits) are allowed to descend to Earth and visit their loved ones. I only ever experienced this festivity in my life, but it was a truly wonderful time to spend with one’s family and speak about one’s ancestors. I’m glad it’s getting some recognition outside of Mexico.

It’s strange though, this is the first year I have ever had a cake with a “Calabera” (skull)(a gift from my brother). Though I guess it makes sense. All my family is living and buried in Mexico so one can’t really celebrate it here in the States.

DSC_1072

Of course the cake is “Tres Leches” a really tasty cake that has a really soft and moist layer filled with sweet milk. If you ever have a chance do try it.

We usually don’t give gifts on birthdays, we’ve always been quite frugal since just hanging out together is a good enough gift. But I have made it to 25 so I guess my brother felt he should give me something good this year. And man will it make it much easier to work. My Vaio laptop is no slouch, but once it gets to the intensive jobs it does slow down. Which is why the gaming pc he gave me such a great gift.

DSC_1070 crop

I was thinking of getting a stronger pc so this really relieves me of having to worry about that. Just a couple of more things and I will have everything I need to fully create everything I can think up to it’s full potential and be fully self sustainable.

So far this year has had a strong start. Here’s hoping I can continue to make it better.

Gracias por estar conmigo este año, espero que sigan con migo en este que viene.

Hasta la proxima,

Quick Update 10/21/16

The deadline for voting on the winners of the art contest on DrawCrowd was yesterday on 10/20/16 and yet only the cosplay category winner has been announced… None of the actual Corel winners have been mentioned at all. That’s truly strange, I wonder if the winners have been notified yet? Having said that, there are two pieces that I feel should be first and second place (of course this is just my top picks).

For second place I would choose this one:

Artist – 녹충

She appears to be an artist from South Korea.

dds06236-1476369301

I really like the way it looks, it’s simple and gives a scene that would happen in real life.

My pick for first place:

Artist – Miimork

She appears to be from Thailand.

morkcaramel-1475281795

This one has so much going on. And without words you get a story out of this one image. I really like it and feel it deserves to win above all other entries. The description says it all though, “This is the illustration of my friend who’s studying architecture. Back to school, new project, and old friend.”

In any case, good luck to the winners.

As for my work? I have been uploading artwork to DrawCrowd in intervals and at different time periods to see when it is most effective. I started with a Reina Tanaka drawing, uploaded at night which got over a hundred views in a day. That amazed me.

It was this one:

Tanaka Reina photobook study
Are you interested in it as a print?

Uploading to Pixiv you barely get a hundred if that in about a week and let’s not even talk about the abysmal views on DevianArt. After I believe five days it is getting close to 500, amazing huh?

After that I uploaded an Ai Takahashi drawing about two or three days later in the morning. And that one exploded in views. In one day it got around 6,000 views! I’ve never had that many people look at my work in such a short amount of time. After two days it is getting close to 9,000 with two likes and one promotion.

This one:

Are you interested in it as a print?

What does liking and promoting mean? DrawCrowd is pretty interesting in that you have two options to let the artist know how much you like their art. You have the standard like option. By liking an artwork you are making a personal and private list of work you liked while letting the artist know that someone liked their artwork. Promoting an artwork on the other hand compiles a public list that is shown in your profile showcasing artwork that you deem good enough to recommend. It’s a really good system that creates a chain reaction of exposing artwork that others that follow said artist might like as well.

Now back to the third piece I have uploaded thus far. The third piece is the Halloween painting of Yuzuki Yukari I made last year. I uploaded it today in the morning and it has already reached close to 20,000  views! In just one day! This site is incredible at giving exposure to one’s work. I’m really glad I decided to give it a try. It did so well in fact that it has made it to DrawCrowds daily ranking! These daily rankings are a list of artwork that are popular during a day and are showcased on the homepage of DrawCrowd giving the artist and art piece more exposure. I debuted at #195, so I still have a ways to go compared to other artists. I wonder if I can reach the top 100?

Well that was a quick update. I also have another announcement but I will leave that for tomorrow. Till next time.

New artwork Featuring Asuka Langley Shikinami

As promised here is some new artwork that will be added to the gallery soon. This time it is Asuka from the new Evangelion movies.

What I like the most about Evangelion is probably Asuka both in the original series and the new remakes. Though most people will not like my opinion, I feel I like the new Asuka more. The reason being that the original Asuka didn’t really seem to have much of a future anymore. And that seemed rather sad to me. Sure it probably makes the story more interesting but I seriously prefer characters that see a light after all the struggles, which is what I think this new remake has and the other one didn’t. Regardless, both were great. The thing I hated the most about the original Asuka is that she was too much in “love” with Kaji, which I never really understood. Why so much fixation. Though the same can be said about Shinji. Although I’m usually ok with weak characters, Shinji just rubbed me the wrong way, I really don’t like him. In either the original or the remakes. This is probably one of the reasons why I wouldn’t put Evangelion among my favorite animes, The protagonist was just not very likeable to me. And that is a big point against a series. But Asuka despite her many flaws made the story very interesting, and in the new movies very likeable.

What do you guys think?
