Ranma the Jet Saotome

Today’s Pixiv theme is suspenders, which automatically reminded me of the character played by Benny the Jet Urquidez on the film “Wheels on Meals”. What I loved about the 80s was that they had the same love for Hong Kong movies which is always an amazing treat when I find out what they are referencing as I watch an episode. Ranma basing a whole lot of it’s aesthetic in all types of martial arts movies but having that fun aspect that was seen in 80s movies thanks in large part to Jackie Chan. Truth be told I was planning to just paint Benny but I soon just had the urge to paint Ranma. I really like these light pastel colors.

The Child Cassette

I finally got a chance to start watching the Mandalorian. And it’s just as good as everyone was saying. Of course Baby Yoda was just as adorable as people were saying as well. Actually, he is even more adorable than I could have imagined. Now I understand why so many people love him so much. While looking through some of my reference photos I came upon an ad for the Panasonic RQ-JA160 Cassette player that featured Yoda.
This is the one: https://64.media.tumblr.com/987a43724700b0ccb0568355a3ab74ed/tumblr_ng9revXOCW1rknqk3o1_1280.jpg

I thought it would be a good parody. I’m not too far into the lore of the Mandalorian but surely they are still in the past if we use our timeline as the base mark right? So this is future technology that is being featured. I decided to use the white model since I prefer that color for my electronics. And I think this Cassette player really looks good in white. Perhaps when I get a chance I will revisit this painting and add some font to play around with the parody aspect more.

Chavo del Ocho Barril is Unbreakable Colored

This one was drawn way back in 2018, and I finally decided to go ahead and paint it.
Here is the original inked drawing: https://darkcloudxero.com/2018/09/15/chavo-del-8-barril-is-unbreakable/

I went for a color pallet that fit in with Diamond is Unbreakable’s. Once I had the layer base down I started playing around with shadows using the multiply tool. Looking at the anime I decided t add some aura around Chavo and Quico as well as their stands Doña Florinda and El Chapulin Colorado. From there I played around with the outer glow and used the linear burn option. On top of that, I placed a new layer to add some white coloration to emphasize where energy was going to be at it’s highest. I’m glad I waited two years to paint it.

That it for now.

Robo Pirate behind Goku Aliens parody

One of the fun things of seeing original Dragon Ball are the references to other stories or media that Akira Toriyama likes. And now that my exposure to more media has expanded I can now see more of it whenever I rewatch Dragon Ball. One such character is the Robot Pirate that is a really cool reference to the Xenomorph from Alien. What I really like about the design is the obvious inspiration to Alien while still making an original and cool design. I knew that when I rewatched Dragon Ball about two years ago I wanted to make a parody painting. It took me two years to finally do it, but that’s just the way things work out sometimes. The scene is of course in reference to the iconic scene with Newt, moments before she was abducted by a Xenomorph.

Bulma’s Delivery Service

This is a painting for the drawing I did for inktober of this year (day 30). I wanted to do a parody of Kiki’s Delivery Service with Bulma as Kiki. Most of it uses the same style and colors but I incorporated elements from Dragon ball. Such changes are substituting Jiji for Tama, changing the font to Capsule Corp in the window reflection, using a mitsubishi car transporting Muten Roshi and Goku and Lunch as the woman walking in the street. Colors aren’t quite the same but look similar enough. I quite like how it turned out.

What do you guys think?

The Mummy Sayu and Momochi Attack!!!

For the last day of Inktober which of course lands on Halloween, I decided to draw Sayu and Momochi saving me from Imhotep (the mummy). It can be found here. This is the first painting I have done after at least a month. I felt quite comfortable painting despite the gap surprisingly.

Within the movie there is two scenes where Imhotep is scared of cats due to him being cursed and punished in the underworld. I thought it would be funny if he got afraid after seeing Sayu and Momochi acting like cute cats.

I really enjoyed adding the effects on top of the painting, it makes everything pop.

It was painted using Corel painter

Chavo del 8 – Barril is Unbreakable

This was inspired by some Mexican memes and of course Chavo del 8 (a legendary 70s Mexican show, that is still aired today and has been shown through all of Latin America). And well, by this point JoJo no longer seems to need an introduction since it kinda owns the meme world.

The name Barril is Unbreakable is not my idea, I first heard it from another meme I saw in Fresh Anime Memes from a Mexican Otaco’s facebook page.

This is the finished piece (finished on August 2nd):

I made it using my new dip pen (or at least it was at the time) using the g nib. It was much easier to use than I thought (the manga Bakuman made it sound much harder). What I like about these pens are that I can change the thickness and the lightness of my pen strokes on my command. The downsides are that the ink can dry up pretty fast and gunk up the nib, which means I have to clean it in intervals as I work. That and since the nib is quite sharp it can scratch off the paper fibers and get stuck on the nib’s wedge. So yeah, it does require quite a bit of upkeep as one uses it. But over all I really love the versatility. All of the illustration was done with the same nib which I find quite amazing. My lines are still not clean, but I can pick that up with experience.

I should have made Chapulin Colorado’s (the character/stand on the far right) pose a lot more dynamic to make it pop out more…

I don’t really remember if I was keeping track of the process, but what I do have is this:

If you notice I made a bit of a mistake and dripped some ink on the top of the paper.

I was actually planning on making it into some manga panels but in the end decided to just join them together. I first had to scan them and then join them together using Photoshop. The reason they are cut off is because I used a large paper that doesn’t fit on my scanner.

That it for now.

Hidden Turtle in Monkey’s Eyes

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but I am a big Martial Arts movie fan. More specifically Hong Kong Kung Fu movies from the 80s and 90s. Jackie Chan movies being my favorites. So I wanted to try out making an homage poster like artwork. Now one of the other things I really love is the original Dragon Ball (when he was a kid, I say this because people think I mean Dragon Ball Z which was just ok). I want to talk about these two loves of mine a bit more, but I will have to wait on that because I am planning on covering these topics on future videos.

With that out of the way Inspiration came from the gag character Jacky Chun and my love for old Hong Kong films. I chose one of the first movies where sparks of what Jackie Chan would later present to the world, Drunken Master. A 1978 classic Martial Arts film. And since Dragon Ball has many martial arts influences including Drunken Master it would fit perfectly.

There are many poster variations but I ended up picking this one (which I feel might be the original poster).

I really like these old posters where they hand paint them and have really interesting themes and expressions.

This is the rough draft that I originally made while at an anime convention.

These two are the basis of what I am working with, and next is the process. First are the pictures I took with my phone.

I used Copic Markers for coloring by the way.

The title of the movie poster is done with a brush, so I wanted to do it traditonally. I measured the center and spaced out three spaces for the characters.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/darkcloudxero/37340986531/in/dateposted-public/

I also tried to emulate brush strokes for the characters.

After painting on the title I was contemplating painting on the rest of the text. And well, I tried but soon realized to instead do it digitally.

Drunken Jackie Chun VI resize

I decided to make the text digitally because it would be alot cleaner, the text would be level and wouldn’t be crooked. On top of that, I was trying to have it ready for Nan Desu Kan.

Here is the original poster again:

And here is my finished version:

I tried to emulate as close as I could all the text around the poster (as well as the background texture), I don’t know Chinese (though I did study a bit of it for a semester once, I obviously am nowhere near at the level where I can say I know a little or any really, just a couple of words and phrases) so I had to guess what each sections of the text would mean. For some of them I just added whatever I thought I could cram with references to me and my work.

Here is what each of the characters I typed means (I used Google translate to come up with the characters so it most likely has a lot of typos and misspelled words and phrases):

Hidden Turtle in Monkey's Eyes Meaning of Characters

That concludes the process for this Dragon Ball piece. Hope you enjoyed it and that it helped you on your art journey if even a little.
