Rei Hino Sweater outfit

I’ve been focusing on just trying to work with color, but it seems that my poses have been a little to stiff and static. This was brought to my attention by my brother. With that in mind, I think it might not be a bad idea to work with poses that are in motion or at the very least interesting. I’ve been having the urge to paint Rei Hino for some time now. So last Friday I finally decided to do so. It snowed quite hard so I chose an outfit fit the weather. Funnily enough, today it started snowing again. I also wanted to try out a more vibrant coloring style for the hair because I really liked the way it looked on this painting of Sayu I made and a reference of Sailor Saturn that was painted by @666pigeon

Sayumi Michishige Glancing Right Painted

Link to the line art post: https://darkcloudxero.com/2021/04/07/sayumi-michishige-glancing-right-line-art/

This is the colored version of my Sayu drawing done with Copics. It was painted with Corel Painter and then used the layer styles from PhotoShop. Each style changes different aspects of the painting when it interacts with the line art and the painting layer. I think each one has it’s appeal. Soft light gave it a pastel look which I really liked. Because the copic ink doesn’t completely cover the texture of the paper and it also doesn’t always completely cover an area (there are some patches that are lighter), these can give interesting effects when painted digitally and played with the layer options. This can be affected even further when playing with the layer transparency.

Sayumi Michishige Glancing Right Line Art

It’s always fun when I draw Sayu. Recently she cut her hair down so I really want to do another piece with her new hair style.

I wanted to work with my Copic for the line art step. I have done this before and really like the effect that I can get out of it when I paint it digitally. Sadly it seems like my copic tips are getting worn out, they have this gummy feel to them now. I guess I’ll have to replace them soon.

Baseball Airi Suzuki

Originally drawn for inktober 2020 day 08.

It can be found here: https://darkcloudxero.com/2020/10/08/inktober-2020-08-airi-susuki/

I used the pastel brush for the background which gave it quite a bit of texture while still being rather loose. Airi was painted in flat colors using Photoshop before moving over to Corel Painter for the other color layers. I remembered that I had left the logo sections free which prompted me to add Suu-san and an A for Airi. For some reason it takes me longer to paint solid sections more than doing it freestyle using Corel Painter’s Oily Brush. Thinking about it now, it might be easier if I just rework the line art digitally and use the bucket tool like animators do. Aesthetically though, if the drawing itself isn’t good, I guess it won’t work either way. I also wonder if having solid black lines might be too much for this type of paintings. I’ll have to keep experimenting. I really want to do more studies of Airi, there are a couple of photos that I have had in mind.

Inktober 2020 08 Airi Susuki

Today’s theme is teeth. I really think Airi’s right canine tooth is really cute so I wanted to draw a picture of her smiling. Recently she throwed a pitch for a game. All her photos were of her smiling, it seems she was having a lot of time. I used one of her photos and modified it. At first I was thinking of having her do one of those exagerated pitching poses like from an old school anime but I wanted to keep her smile the focus. This time I had a bit more time so I inked and hatched it.

Inktober 2020 07 Fancy Momochi

Today was a rough one… But I still managed to get some time together so that I could make a drawing today. Today’s theme is fancy. I was watching a segment of a variety show where Momoko was dressed by someone else. And in this one she had a black blouse with a slit in the back and a skirt. When I saw her in that I knew I wanted to do a piece in some way. And keeping with the theme I felt I should have her in a fancy tea house with her iconic pinky out. I also was looking at antique chairs and found this really cool one that only showed the front but I figured I could just make up how it would look in the back. I really like the way it came out. But due to the limited time today I decided to just leave it at the line art stage. Once I have more time I will go back and figure out what direction to finish it.

Asuka Kato miniskirt

I finally did a painting of Asuka Kato from Watamote. I really like the way she tries to get closer to Kuroki, even to the point of giving Kuroki’s weirdness a pass. I am a bit weary that she will get corrupted by her but I think there won’t be another Kii-chan incident (I’m sure Kuroki won’t let that happen again). She’s just such a nice genuine person. Plus she’s gorgeous.

The drawing was done for the 17th day of Inktober 2019. It was painted with Corel Painter except for the snow which was done with Photoshop using a combination of the scatter brush options and then using a special effects brush. I quite like how it turned out.

This painting has three versions. The original drawing painted of course. And then two versions of her holding an umbrella, one with snow and one without.

Sayumi Michishige Pokemon Trainer II

This was a second try at using Hiros’ ( siiteiebahiro ) style. I wanted to try painting it with Copics and then give it another try digitally with Corel Painter. I used a picture from Sayu’s Instagram as a reference then modified it to have her holding a Pokeball (it’s the third photo in this post).

Awesome, seems like I can post Instagram posts here directly!

Here is are my attempts:

This is the version done using Copic markers.

I used the fully inked drawing from above and faded it so that I could digitally paint over it. I debated over what to put in the background but decided to keep it simple and practice merging the focal point and the background together at some point in the future.
