Inktober 2018 #19 Scorched Shin Gojira

Shin Gojira. I wasn’t too sure about the design and the movie itself when I started seeing the first images. And when I saw the film for the first time I was feeling contradicting thoughts since it was such a different take from the Godzilla we all knew up to that point. But after seeing it a second time I really loved it. And I kept liking it even more the more times that I saw it. I really loved that scene where we first saw it make his first atomic breath. The way it transitioned from smoke, then to fire and then to his condensed atomic breath was truly a sight and moment that really touched me. With that in mind, I chose that scene for the scorched prompt.

I’m actually I was able to do exactly what I wanted in this piece. I used the brush tip cover large areas and was able to control the values and textures. I made the fire with rough and irregular lines yet it somehow managed to still look good…

Inktober 2018 #17 Swollen Goku Bulma

Short update. Did this one rather quickly. It doesn’t look bad, but it could obviously be done much better. Some lines were in excess and give a messy look on Bulmas hair among other details. Really enjoyed working on it though.

Inktober 2018 #16 Angular Himiko Toga

Can’t really add too much description since I have to update a couple of them, but I mainly did this one since my brother really likes this character. It isn’t finished since I didn’t have much time but probably will be when I have a bit of time.

Inktober 2018 #15 Weak Itsuki Takeuchi

Today’s prompt is “weak”, I had some ideas (mainly Shinji…, and Tomoko from Watamote though portraying that may be a bit tough since she is such a complex character) but in the end I don’t know if they would work or repeat too much of the same ideas. So I decided to look at some of the manga in my collection and then spotted my Initial D volume sitting there and remembered that Itsuki and his 85′ existed. He talks a big game but is… well… pretty weak. The perfect candidate!

This is the finished piece:

Inktober 2018 #14 Clock Sakura Kinomoto

Today’s prompt is “Clock”. I had vary vague ideas of what I could draw but then I remembered Cardcaptor Sakura. Then I remembered there was the time card episode (#12 for those interested). And sure enough it fit quite well. I was making up everything as I went along and looking at the references I screen-grabbed from the episode. Personally I liked the way it turned out, I wan’t to come back to it and take more time on it and try to color it.

By the way, Cardcaptor Sakura is among my favorite animes and my favorite Clamp series.

Man, that angle makes it seem like I am in the sky. It’s amazing how such a simple tilt can make a big difference. It might be a good idea to try and remake other anime scenes so I can study their impacts and effects.

Now for the process:

If you actually read these and scroll through them you will see something a bit extra.

I was actually starting with my g pen but I made the mistake of once again trying out the Sakura Koi ink markers. And I just don’t really like the way they work or how they have color. Personally I would have preferred if they were more neutral with no color other than the grayscale. In any case because of that I drew it twice.

Original try:

IMG_20181014_123957

And there you go, I made another dumb mistake…

IMG_20181014_134541

Was actually planning on only working with the top part of Sakura, but decided to go ahead and create the bottom portion of Sakura’s body. Surprisingly it went rather smooth.

IMG_20181014_140946

IMG_20181014_141409

Then comes the Koi pens.

IMG_20181014_141911

IMG_20181014_143326

It doesn’t look horrible. In fact it has a rather interesting appeal but would rather just use black, white and everything in between.

IMG_20181014_144039

And here is the second try. This time I only used a “normal” pen, which made me draw much faster. Lines were all consistent so I knew what I would get, plus since it dried instantly I don’t have to worry about smudging the ink so no wait time to move from one end of the paper to the other.:

Inktober 2018 #13 Guarded Shinji Ikari

Oh, man. If you know anything about Evangelion and Shinji Ikari I hope that just looking at the drawing will be enough to portray the theme and what I was going for. Could have shaded it and add a bit more to the background, but this feeling of loneliness and emptiness I think fits well.

Had to make a quick one today since I get busy during the weekends with my other job. Also this is the second piece following the prompts. I was quite surprised at how fast I was able to make this drawing… (・□・)

Inktober 2018 #12 White Whale RE Zero

Man, this week has sucked. My XP Pen stopped working properly and my cursor kept travelling over to my secondary screen every time I tried to use Corel Painter. And despite uninstalling the driver and reinstalling them I just couldn’t get it to work. At one point I gave up since it took too much of my time and decided to try out Photoshop. It worked there, but then the drivers crashed and my pen just refused to work. Only way to make it work was to restart my computer but that messed up my workflow since it happened so often. Then there was my vehicle that had faulty turn signals… I had to troubleshoot that for the whole week during my free times. It was a pain but I managed to find the source of the problem fixed today. So hey….. (๑ ˊ͈ ᐞ ˋ͈ )ƅ̋

Anyway, back to inktober, I was thinking maybe I should work with the inktober prompts after talking with my brother. So I decided to do just that. While talking with my brother I was reminded of the whale from Re: Zero. These were some of the most epic episodes. Really loved learning about Wilhelm van Astrea.

This is the final piece:

Inktober 2018 #11 Athena Asamiya

Started really late so not much time, need to get to sleep soon. But here is a quick drawing of Athena Asamiya from King of Fighters 99′.  She was another one of the characters that I really liked/like using.

This is the piece, no shading just the outline this time:

Looks really rough and unfinished, but that’s alright.

Inktober 2018 #10 K’

SNK and the King of Fighters are by far my favorite fighting games, and I always felt that they had the better designs compared to their competitor Street Fighters. Man, King of Fighters. It just brings back memories from my childhood. I started with the Art of Fighting on my Super Nintendo. It was one of my favorite games that I played with my brothers back then. Then I later learned and played the King of Fighters (and of course Metal Slug) on the arcade machines that some people had in their houses or in the small shops. Those were some fun times (though it did eat up my coins).

Later when I was in fifth grade I had a friend who owned a Playstation and got to play the King of Fighters 99. This is the game I have the most fond memories of. That’s also where I learned about my favorite King of Fighters character K’. He has such a cool design and at the time it was quite uncommon to see a character with brown skin, which was a big deal for me at the time. Of course we (my brother, my friends and myself) all wanted him to be Mexican and since he had a mysterious background we used that as an excuse to make him so (in our minds). He had such a cool design with his white hair with his cool fire arm. His fighting style was also pretty cool, the way he walked and his moves, then there was the one inch punch… Point is I really liked using him, even if I sucked at using his move set.

This is the final drawing:

IMG_20181010_185632

I’m thinking of using this smaller nib (I believe it’s a maru nib) to work with the shading and see if that makes it faster and easier than using the G nib. I can control it, but it’s all up to pen as to whether it releases the ink the way I want or it doesn’t jump as I shade.

I decided to give myself a bit of a challenge so I  used a gif which kept moving so I had to really pay attention and remember what I wanted to draw. I believe this is from King of Fighters 99′:

Inktober 2018 #9 Leaf

Just something simple and fast so I can work on another piece. Funnily enough it was a rather tough piece. Not because it don’t have the skills but because the pen kept skipping and dropping not enough ink or noticeable droplets that messed with the values. Because of that I was forced to work with darker and darker values. A shame because I was aiming to try and get it to look realistic.

IMG_20181009_182302

Here is the process:

While I was refilling this little container where I keep the ink I wasn’t thinking and allowed an ink bubble to burst which of course fell onto the paper. After ending the cycle of mistakes I go and make simple and dumb one.

Inktober 2018 #8 Our dog

Today I wanted to draw my dog. I’ve had the idea of dressing him like a human, but that will be some other time (if I do do it, you’ll see what I mean). Now, because has hair all over I have to really think about where I place shading and where I leave it blank. I wanted to comment on this with Reina’s drawing but I feel like I have really gotten better at my control with the pen. I have a tendency to really press down hard when I draw and write, so hopefully all of this translates into my future projects.

This little guy has a tendency to show his cute face when he wants something. Whether it’s to get pet or if he wants to eat or drink some water. He lets us know by acting like he is eating something to say he wants to eat or he licks his tongue really loud to tell us he wants water. He’s such a funny guy.
