Rei Hino Sweater outfit

I’ve been focusing on just trying to work with color, but it seems that my poses have been a little to stiff and static. This was brought to my attention by my brother. With that in mind, I think it might not be a bad idea to work with poses that are in motion or at the very least interesting. I’ve been having the urge to paint Rei Hino for some time now. So last Friday I finally decided to do so. It snowed quite hard so I chose an outfit fit the weather. Funnily enough, today it started snowing again. I also wanted to try out a more vibrant coloring style for the hair because I really liked the way it looked on this painting of Sayu I made and a reference of Sailor Saturn that was painted by @666pigeon

The videos for How to Draw Manga Redraw Pen and Tone is live

Main video:

Extended version can be seen here:

On April 8th there was a twitter challenge to redraw the character from a “How to draw Manga” book. The book they were talking about was a different one that I didn’t use my self. When I grew up, I used a the version distributed here in North America by Digital Manga Distribution. I know that the whole point of the challenge was to try and redraw that character, which is… well look at him yourself:

But I was thinking more in terms of retrying to draw a cover that I had once tried to draw when I was a kid. I didn’t quite get the contents of the book themselves, I was more interested in the cover art done by Kazuaki Morita.

In the end, I actually ended up finding that drawing I made years ago:

Man, that reversed hand is just…

Here is the current attempt:

The background music/sounds are from old trailers that I tended to hear from anime that I rented from my local library. People from my generation will know exactly what I’m talking about. Luckily, there are people online that are uploading these now classic anime history. Much like how AnimeCollective is doing. Link to each of the songs used and their respective trailers are below.

“Yumemiru Ai Tenshi” by  by Ai tenshi densetsu Wedding Peach Trailer from ADV Films:

Media Blasters Trailer from Twin Signal:

“Wake Up” by Chisato:

“Treat or Goblins” by Megumi Hayashibara:

“Soramimi Cake” by Oranges & Lemons:

“Yuzurenai Negai” by Naomi Tamura:

“Carnival Babel” Takada Band:

I ended up only watching two of these anime. Blue Seed and Azumanga Daioh. I’m surprised I still haven’t seen Magic Knight Reyearth.

Goku Dodging Jump

This is a double feature of sorts. I will be doing two types of painting on this drawing of Goku which has been drawn with ink. I first used watercolors to paint Goku and then I painted him again digitally using Corel Painter 2020. The time between each was very noticeable. The traditional painting took and the digital painting took me only . I really have to think about how I advance after every movement. Meanwhile with digital painting, I seem to have more experience and I can make as many mistakes as I want since I can undo right away. But I guess that doesn’t completely transfer over to traditional. Although I can go as detailed as I want, it might be better if I develop a simpler style like Little Thunders which can be so versatile but not overworked.

This painting has made it clear that I should practice more with watercolors. One other thing I remembered, don’t ink your drawing if you will be using watercolors on it (this is only if the inks aren’t waterproof). Otherwise they will smudge when painting. Instead, go over the lines by pressing hard on them using a pencil (I mean I know this, I don’t know why I didn’t remember). Then erase everything. If done correctly, the lines will be visible even when painting over them. One you are done painting, the line art process can finally be done. This can be done with ink, color pencils or more watercolors.

Metal Bat inked painted

I just noticed, but this drawing was done almost a year ago. And it has been painted for almost a couple of weeks now. But I kept pushing it back. Maybe I should upload every day instead of only on weekdays. But I do plan on making videos on things beside the speed paints as well, so I’ll see how my schedule ends up looking before I make a decision.

I went for a flat colring style this time. Hmm… Metal Bat looks a bit like Dracula…

Sporty Nagatoro

While looking through my references I found one that reminded me a lot of Nagatoro and the run training story:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/256986722474598315/

The Nagatoro anime has finally released. They did a good job animating it. The coloring style is also pretty good, although there are some instances that they want to add more details to Nagatoro’s hair but it looks a bit too digital? Although it’s 2D, it somehow looks cg. The hair effects to make it more detailed need some work or needs to be stylized differently, or maybe using different colors might look better? Other than that though, I’m loving the voices they chose, Nagatoro’s fits perfectly. Wonder what the opening is going to be like? I wonder if making those transition segments are going to be common place? What I mean by this, sometimes when they make a transition some cute Nagatoro cats and Nagatoro appear. The other anime that I have seen doing this was in Demon Slayer. If you guys know what I’m talking about, let me know if this is becoming a popular trend in other animes.

This was painted with Corel Painter 2020 using the Sargent Brush and oily brush. It took me 2 hours and 22 seconds.

How to Draw Manga Redraw Pen and Tone

A bit of a late upload. I was planning on uploading some of the work I had lined up but when I was on twitter I noticed that #HowToDrawMangaRedraw was trending. The one being redrawn is from a book done by Katy Coope. But the one I grew up with was by Ryo Toudo. Looking inside the book, the cover artist is Kazuaki Morita. I really love his style. Man, this cover really brings back memories of when I was first getting into anime and was amazed by the selection of media that our local library carried. I won’t lie, I didn’t quite get the contents of the book back in the day. I mainly got it for the cover and tried to draw them. Thinking about it now, I might have that drawing stored in backpack that contains all my old work. If I remember correctly, I put the thumbs in the wrong positions. I’ll upload it tomorrow. There was another cover that I really liked, maybe I’ll give that one a try as well (also tomorrow).

Update (4/9/21) – Couldn’t find that old drawing I was talking about, I did find a lot of rather embarrassing ones though… If I find it though I’ll post it here.

Turtle Knight

Just a quick painting that I was sketching till it turned into this. At some point it looked like a set of armor so I decided to go with it. The base was started with the Real Tapered Wet Flat Brush and at some point I went over it with the Tapered Oils brush.

Style Makeover Momoko Tsugunaga

Main video:

Extended version:

When I first used the the Sargent brush I wanted to try out it’s full capabilities and the first painting I used this on was with Momoko Tsugunaga. One other thing I wanted to try out was a painting with water drops and condensation. With that in mind, I chose Momoko’s photo from the variety show (I believe it is London Hearts) where her entire look was given a complete overhaul. It seems that these were for a calendar where different talents were all given the same treatment. It’s a shame but I couldn’t find any recordings of this online, only some screengrabs (this means someone out there does have it/had it). Based on said screen grabs there were about three different photos that I could have used (maybe for a later painting). There’s no denying that Momoko looks really cute with this look, but I prefer her more natural look better.

I mentioned this before, but I think I am finally forming my favorite tools for painting digitally. I’ve been slacking on watercolors though, so I should do some more traditional paintings soon.

As can be seen above, this painting comes with two Youtube links. I already have a couple of paintings that have been recorded and another one that has been edited and will be live this Thursday. Aside from speed paints, I want to make instructional videos where I focus on one technique/topic and just some videos about things that interest me (although I haven’t figured out how I want to structure them yet). Luckily Youtube is allowing songs to be used as long as the owners are cool with it, of course this also means that these videos get no monetization capabilities. Which is a good trade. I actually lost a past channel because of the old methods that Youtube had implemented.

Terry Bogard Lunging Punch

I didn’t really have any plans when I started painting Terry. I just started painting forms so that I could play with the Real Tapered Wet Flat Brush. Again, I was amazed by how the strokes came out but sampling the colors was a pain. Of course the solution is to have a separate layer with the colors readily available off in some corner. I was thinking of adding some power effects to Terry’s punch but I think keeping it simple this time should be fine. I just wanted to focus on the pose and movement.

Berserk Unit 02

I have been planning painting the other Eva units when they go berserk. This time though, I went for a complete digital painting. Rewatching the scene when Asuka activates the berserk mode is quite heart wrenching in all aspects. Specially since even then, she was completely overpowered and wrecked. Even now it’s hard watching her suffering that much. The end of Evangelion version is quite different from the rebuilds which I could also paint at some point, Although I would probably opt for a complete body since it has very interesting angles and poses. In this portrayal of the berserk scene in the End of Evangelion, I did a what if Asuka could over power the lance and destroy the mass produced Evas.

This painting was also done using the Real Tapered Wet Flat Brush, just as was done with Airi’s painting. Except for the background which was done using the Tapered Oils brush.

Airi Jacket

We are actually still getting snow where I live, so that inspired me to finally give this painting a try before the weather finally changes to a warmer one. I really love the colors of Airi in this cold weather and wanted to give it a try for a while now. It’s also been a while since I did a realistic painting so I opted to go for that. There are so many more photos I want to try painting so we’ll see when I get another chance.

This painting is based on Airi’s digital photobook vol. 92. I only used the real tapered wet flat brush for the whole piece. I like the brush but it can be hard to use because when I try to use the same paint color, I can’t quite get it back using the eyedrop tool since each bristle stroke is different and mixes together. I already have a number of paintings lined up where I kept trying out this brush and a new one that I believe is my new main brush, to be used with the oily bristle and tapered oils brush.

Indifferent Rei

This piece was much easier to paint now that I had the colors thought out with the Asuka painting. Where applicable I just used the eyedrop tool.

If paired with the previous Asuka piece, than I would think that Rei could care less about Asuka’s provocation and would have her mind in an entirely different place.

Posing and setting was inspired by Momoko Tsugunaga’s Rei cosplay done back in Hello Channel.

I just saw the trailer with Rei planting crops, now all that fan art I saw makes sense. I want to paint her in that scenario as well…
