Today’s Pixiv theme is “idol” so why not draw and paint the eternal idol Lynn Minmay from Macross. It’s funny, while looking for references for the pose I would use to draw Minmay. I came upon a photo of Naoko Kawai wearing almost the exact same clothes that Minmay used in “Do you Remember Love”.
This is the photo in question: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/65/46/72/65467210d1a96d7d94cde7e6efe16c18.jpg
That of course had me decide on this particular reference photo. Really quite enjoyed the way it came out, specially when it was colored in.

A painting of the ink drawing I did for Inktober 2020 day 16.
It can be found here: https://darkcloudxero.com/2020/10/16/inktober-2020-16-rocket/
I’m actually quite interested in watching it, luckily it seems like it has been fansubbed so I will have the chance now. I’m really glad the community of this media exists.
For this painting I went for a simple 80s anime. I played around with the static filter, but this time I only used in for the background while leaving the character layer clean and crisp. I quite like the way it looks together.

An anime version of Naoko Kawai’s UNbalance cover of her 1983 single (if you get the chance check it out).
For this painting I again went for a flat painting style but added in color variations that dealt with shadows and translucence. I still wonder if I should add highlights? will have to try it out at some point. The metallic arch was surprisingly simple to paint.

Akina Nakamori’s anime cover for Prologue, her debut studio album. I of course went for an 80s anime painting style. The static really reminds me of the cellulose that was noticeable in the old airings on tv back in the day and on old prints of classic anime. When I see it appropriate I really like using the static filter effect that Photoshop contains.

It’s a bit late when I’m posting this so I will keep it short but this is based on the ad campaign called Yes Coke Yes. The reference used is one of the ads that Hayami Yu. I’ve been wanting to do some summer artwork and also utilize the 80s ads that I have. It has also been a while since I’ve done a simpler painting. It was a lot of fun painting this piece, luckily I managed to finish it in time.

I had attempted to draw this and paint this for New Years but I didn’t really like the way it came out. So I attempted it again, but since I had already painted the original lineart I had no choice but to go at it digitally. I would say that the painting process isn’t taking that much time, but getting references does. I decided to use the coloring style from the movie Macross: Do you remember love. Aside from coloring it I also wanted to edit some other parts of the drawing it self. The first part was the mouth and lips. I decided to take out the linework of the upper and lower lip. I would form it wit color instead. Of course this and all the other changes were dictated by the references I got from the movie. For the mouth, I also resized it and made it smaller while also repositioning it. The Eyes were moved down a bit and I erased most of the eyelash strands. Eyelashes were also thined and shortened a bit. To my surprise, when I was screen capturing the final reference shots I came across a scene that is almost the same background like the Airi Suzuki picture that I’m using. I quite like the addition of the shadow. I feel like I could’ve added something on the left side of the painting. But this works. One thing I do know is that it looks quite good using a diluted ink linework so that the color influences it when applied.

Was working on this last week but didn’t get to finish the painting process till just now after work. The line work was done using my Stabilo pens. It’s been a while since I last used them. I wanted to see what kind of effect it would have when I underlaid it digital paint. It’s not a bad look, especially in the skin tones but, I think the blue is a little too well blue. I’m thinking using a grey pen on most parts except on the skin tones would work better. But at least now I know. It’s a shame they don’t really work well with watercolors (they smear and bleed). Well at least they work with copics. It’s a shame really because when it comes to traditional painting/coloring I now prefer to use watercolors. As for the digital painting process I tried to replicate the anime coloring style which I just absolutely love. Will definitely try doing it again. I’ll also do try doing this using my traditional paints.
Things have been getting rather hectic lately. Stay safe out there, and never give up.

I drew another ink drawing. I was looking through Sergey Orlov aka punksy‘s artwork and wanted to do another 80s style drawing. I want to paint it with a simple color scheme. But that will be later. I used both the g pen and the maru pen. I really love the thin lines I get from maru pens. The only reason I hadn’t used them for so long was because the ink didn’t flow out of the pen. But after thinning out the ink with water that solved the problem and man am I glad for that. One thing I wanted to try out was this set of Chinese watercolors, but to my surprise it didn’t contain black. After mixing blue, green and yellow I got an okay looking grey but instead I decided to water down the black ink. I quite like the way it worked out and will experiment with it more next time.

I really wanted to draw Goku in his snow outfit from the muscle tower arc. When I was getting reference pictures from the anime I noticed the Suno seemed to have a crush on Goku. Later when I compared the same arc in the manga, the whole subplot was completely absent. In any case I decided to make a piece of Goku and Suno. I wanted to make it seem like it was a scene from the anime. I wasn’t too sure how I would pose Goku and Suno so I first started by painting the background. I really like the way it came out. After that I decided on having Suno looking at Goku as they built a snowman. Lastly I decided to add some snowflakes.

This is actually the last drawing of 2019 and the first one as well as painting of 2020. I’ve been wanting to do a piece of Airi Suzuki for a while now. I wanted to also practice with my Holbein watercolors as well as try out my Fabriano paper which contains 25% cotton. This is my first time using hot press papers. They are quite smooth. The paper it self didn’t buckle as much as the watercolor paper I have been using from Canson. The Holbein watercolors go on quite smoothly. Thinking about it now I have been doing a lot of first right off the bat this year. I finally tried out the mop brush I bought in mid 2019 but have yet to use till just now. I’m amazed at how much area I can cover with it and how even I can do so. So far I really like the way the supplies I’m using react work. Will have to make more tests to see how much more they can be pushed.
For the painting I decided to make a simple 80s anime style. It was really hard to stop myself from adding more to it (really hard). But it was worth holding myself back because I like the way it turned out. The background color was too close to the skins so Airi looked a bit bland, but once I added more yellow to the background the whole picture and Airi came to life and looked so much better. I do want to do another piece of Airi but push to a more detailed painting with more colors. I just love the way the Holbein watercolors get painted on the paper and look when combined.
