Work in Progress Background

Was having a bit of hard time coming up with something to paint or draw today, but I eventually did get an idea of what I could work on. But I will showcase that next week. For now here is the background. First time working on a wet reflective surface. Really want to learn how to do them in all mediums.

Momochi’s Dangerous Upward Glance Watercolor

I’m going to be practicing with watercolors for a bit. I wan’t to see what I can do with the media. The first watercolor of the year is Momochi, using the first drawing of the year. I was a bit worried as I was painting but things were becoming more clear as I kept going. She looks so cute. It’s a bit of a shame the background didn’t get picked up by the scanner.

Momochi’s Dangerous Upward Glance inked

Happy New Year 2021!

For the first drawing of 2021 I drew Momochi. My original plan was to paint it with watercolors but I decided to make two versions of it, an inked version and a painted one. The painted version I plan to do next. As I thought, the DVD Magazines had plenty of references for me. The upward glance she gave while travelling up the mountain was killer. It’s probably even more potent if she did that in person.

I used a mix of ink and in some sections a more diluted ink for sections I wanted to keep light but still give shadows to. This time I made sure to hatch it slower so that the end result would look cleaner. My plan is to continue doing that from now on. The process didn’t take that much longer anyway. I got really lucky that Momochi’s face wasn’t ruined actually, a huge blob of ink just poured out of my pen below her chin. Luckily that section was supposed to be blacked out and the ink didn’t spread to her face. I won’t lie, it was an agonizing 25-30 seconds while I tried to find some tissue paper to soak up the ink before it began going everywhere. I feel like the drawing wasn’t complete until I added some blush lines, I really like the end result.

Hope you guys had a great start to the year. Here’s hoping for the best.

Happy New Year!

Momochi Hiding

Today I decided to paint using the Corel Painter real watercolors again. This time I decided to use different brush presets and they definitely act differently. But I guess that is to be expected. Looking at the end result, they give off that watercolor and Copic look. I used the inktober day 26 line art of Momochi’s last photobook. I wanted to emulate the coloring style of classic manga.

I really want to draw more of Momochi. Luckily the Country Girls dvd magazine has plenty of references of her interacting with the snow. And I really want to paint her in the red outfit from her last photobook. But before that, I want to make a New Year’s piece, I already have an idea so it’s just a matter of doing it.

Hope you guys had a great weekend.

Marisa Christmas Magic

Managed to finish this painting, although I wonder how the other ones will fare since today will be rather busy. Just in case though, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone. Hope you all have a great time. Please be safe during these days.

Athena Asamiya Idol

This drawing was originally drawn on the second day of Inktober 2020 which can be found here: https://darkcloudxero.com/2020/10/02/inktober-2020-02-athena-asamiya/

When it came to painting Athena I was imagining some colors I had seen in what I think was a promotional video of Sonoko Kawai. But when I was trying to find that video I failed. More than likely it got deleted or it might have been someone else but I’m pretty sure it was Sonoko. This is one of the reasons I have started to just back up any videos that I like and that interest me.
With that option out of the question I remembered I had some JR Christmas commercials that had similar colors to what I wanted. I ended up using the commercial featuring Eri Fukatsu. Getting the skin tone correctly took a couple of tries since I hadn’t used it before. I should definitely play around with such lighting more.

Komi and Manbagi Snow school day

This was painted using the drawing I made for inktober 2019 on day 21. When I first drew this I was imagining fall but it of course wasn’t hard to change it to winter. I actually finished this about a week ago but since Valentines day was getting close I decided to hold on to it. Of course I decided to add the letters to fit in with Valentines day. I did think about adding some chocolate gifts but I think this will do fine this time.

I really like the path the manga decided to take in regards to Komi’s and Manbagi’s relationship. They are both really cute but in very different ways both in looks and personality.

Hope you guys like it:

There are three versions of it, but I still can’t post them here through Pixiv. Here’s some previews from Twitter:

Asuka Kato miniskirt

I finally did a painting of Asuka Kato from Watamote. I really like the way she tries to get closer to Kuroki, even to the point of giving Kuroki’s weirdness a pass. I am a bit weary that she will get corrupted by her but I think there won’t be another Kii-chan incident (I’m sure Kuroki won’t let that happen again). She’s just such a nice genuine person. Plus she’s gorgeous.

The drawing was done for the 17th day of Inktober 2019. It was painted with Corel Painter except for the snow which was done with Photoshop using a combination of the scatter brush options and then using a special effects brush. I quite like how it turned out.

This painting has three versions. The original drawing painted of course. And then two versions of her holding an umbrella, one with snow and one without.

Tomoko and Yū Wink

This is a colored version of the 10th day piece for Inktober 2019. I really like the relationship between Tomoko and Yū. I also love the way it has developed throughout the story. Originally this piece was supposed to be taking place in autumn, but since we are now in winter I decided to put them in a snowy scenery. This piece was painted with Corel Painter.

There are three versions. One “clean”, one with warm breath and one with snow (plus the warm breath). I don’t know how to post them here since they tend to get taken off when posted here. If you click the picture it will take you to Pixiv where you can see all three versions.

Or actually here is a preview from twitter (sadly the previews aren’t full sized).

Matsuyama Hikaru snow training shot

I’ve been watching Captain Tsubasa 2018 and let’s say that it has been an amazing experience. I have seen the original series when I was in Mexico and then I saw the Road to 2002 version while I was in middle school (I think, it was quite a while ago)? That version was just ok although I did like the voice actors but the art style is really not my style at all. This new version is actually quite amazing. At first I wasn’t too sure about it since they were changing somethings from the original version, but they were mainly done because it was after all a version that is taking place in this time period. It was also a bit weird seeing an anime that goes from the old coloration to the new really bright and vibrant one we have today. But it does look quite amazing. One of the things I really like is that as the series kept going the quality also increased and to top it off they were paying more homage to the original manga. The second opening is definitely my favorite out of all the versions that have been released throughout the years. Of course my favorite sections are when they go into an animated version of the manga panels having Hyuga and Tsubasa going at it.

It looks so cool (I wanted to incorporate some of those speed/power lines into my artwork). I really hope they release it on blue ray over here in the States:

In any case I have done a piece based on Hyuga already, although he looks really stiff. I would like to make an updated version at some point. So now I wanted to make a piece on another one of my favorite characters, Matsuyama Hikaru. He has always been among my favorites, competing against Hyuga for my first place (which is funny because they have a rivalry within the series itself). In one of the most recent episodes he has finally unleashed his special shot. I’ve been watching it while I workout in the gym and that scene got me fired up and going even harder while I was doing my cardio. This series really helps as motivation to push me even harder. So with that in mind and the actual snowfall that has been hitting here in my city I wanted to make a piece of him training his special shot while it snowed.

One other element was having Yoshiko Fujisawa looking over him. There are many couples in this series but theirs is definitely among my favorites. The headband that is given to Hikaru is such a cute and tender moment that I feel it is quite iconic in the series. Must be nice having someone like you like that huh…

(〃 ̄ω ̄〃)ゞ

Here is the final piece:

This is the main reference for the body posture (I wanted him to look like he was moving and not too stiff):

Here are the rest of the references (first two were to get an idea of the color scheme):

Here is the drawing process (at first I was going to have him training in his jersey but that would have been mean huh, so while getting screenshots for reference I came upon his tracksuit so I went with that instead):

And here is the digital painting process:

What I like most about Matsuyama Hikaru is that he is a hard worker. He might not have the genius ability of all the top aces from the series but he has the initiative and drive to push himself and in turn also his teammates in order to compete on even ground to the other teams. He truly is an inspiration for the many of us who might not have a natural talent but could still achieve great results based on pure hard work and tenacity. If you have something that you are passionate about don’t give up when you encounter setbacks, push through and achieve new limits by working hard.
