Because I was imagining this as a scene from a movie, I played around with some additional layers of film grain from a 70s movie. Of course I had to change the dimensions of the canvas so I expanded it, and added more background. I feel it gives it a nice touch.
The original line art was done for Inktober 2021 day 14.
With the idea of paying homage to the final scene where Jackie Chan defeats the Eagle clans master, I chose to make the background have that Chinese mountains look. For the Naoko painting I did last time I went for a flat painting style. This time I went for for my current painting style. I started with Tao Pai Pai and then painted Goku. Tao Pai Pai was actually quite simple, Goku’s hair though I had to think about. How could I keep his iconic hair style but also make it not so flat. That’s why I started playing around with crazy hair strands going every which way. I quite like what I ended up with. For the line art, I had an idea that I had in mind for a while. Usually I was selecting the white areas around the line art sot that I could isolate them from the background. But selecting the line art only and making a separate layer and filling it with the paint bucket tool. From there the line art is now isolated and I can modify it any way that I want. This has made the process much simpler. On top of that I started changing the color of the line art so that it’s not just black which I think gives the painting more versatility.
Managed to finish it. Went for a more anime look. I didn’t quite like the way last years version looked. Looking at it again though, I’m feel it just needs to be refined and it can look much better.
In any case, I wanted to just draw from memory this time to come up with the scenario and poses. I wanted the poses to be a bit more interesting. I debated on whether to have Goku swing from the awning by his tail or hanging by the counter (I of course went with the counter idea). As for Bulma I decided to have her ordering some food. I went for a pose that made it look like she was fidgeting and moving about due to the cold. I went with her outfit she used when they first met Oolong. Which is freaking cool and iconic. I just modified her socks to tights due to the weather.
This year has been something, but I feel grateful that I can still keep going and making my art. Hopefully you guys are doing well. Not much we can do but keep pushing forward. Here’s to a better year. Thank you everyone who has continuously looked at my work and liked it. I hope I can make more art that will bring some positive emotions in the future.
This painting is done using the line art I made for this year’s inktober day 2. I didn’t really have a plan for how this painting would go but I eventually decided on setting it in twighlight and basing the color scheme through that. It felt a bit lonely with just the sky though, so I eventually started adding clouds and at some point some trees which are based on their home.
What would a date with Goku be? Would it just be like that episode where Homer from the Simpsons gets kicked out of the restaurant for eating all the food? I feel sorry for ChiChi.
Today is day two of Inktober. I decided to follow the prompt this time which is “suit”. As I thought about it, I came up with the idea of drawing Goku wearing a suit. Then I thought it would be cute if I drew Goku and Chi Chi together dressed in formal attire.
Happy Goku day. I can’t believe I just found out that May 9th is Goku Day. I didn’t have anything ready or planned, but luckily I had the line art of Goku celebrating that fits the occasion perfectly. Really like a gif of Goku and Krillin fighting during their younger days so I used that setting and colors for my painting.
It’s been two years since we witnessed Goku’s ultra instinct (in animate form). I’m surprised it took me this long to actually make a painting. When it comes to Dragon Ball’s many forms, my favorite is Kaio Ken because it makes the usage of it a gamble and gives it stakes every time Goku uses it. Of course this was later replaced and pretty much forgotten when the Super Saiyan form was introduced. Luckily, during the run of Super it was brought back and paired up with Super Saiyan Blue. The second form that I really liked was Ultra Instinct. This brought it back more to fighting and not so much who has the most power. It’s a form that requires a state of mind more than anything so that the body can move on experience and instinct during a fight. Plus the mastered form looks really cool.
This is a double feature of sorts. I will be doing two types of painting on this drawing of Goku which has been drawn with ink. I first used watercolors to paint Goku and then I painted him again digitally using Corel Painter 2020. The time between each was very noticeable. The traditional painting took and the digital painting took me only . I really have to think about how I advance after every movement. Meanwhile with digital painting, I seem to have more experience and I can make as many mistakes as I want since I can undo right away. But I guess that doesn’t completely transfer over to traditional. Although I can go as detailed as I want, it might be better if I develop a simpler style like Little Thunders which can be so versatile but not overworked.
This painting has made it clear that I should practice more with watercolors. One other thing I remembered, don’t ink your drawing if you will be using watercolors on it (this is only if the inks aren’t waterproof). Otherwise they will smudge when painting. Instead, go over the lines by pressing hard on them using a pencil (I mean I know this, I don’t know why I didn’t remember). Then erase everything. If done correctly, the lines will be visible even when painting over them. One you are done painting, the line art process can finally be done. This can be done with ink, color pencils or more watercolors.
