I recently saw an artist that worked with light colors and used that as an aesthetic advantage. Usually when I paint, almost every time it looks really light so I worried whether it would look well to others or not. So this time I have decided to just paint like usual and try to not overwork the painting too much. What I did want to try though is a version where I just painted and let the colors separate the whole piece as a whole. In the second version I added some lighting to the hair, darkened the lips and added some linework. Personally I prefer the original version more although I do like the the linework version as well. I went for a semi realistic/anime style. This mainly entails that one keeps the detail on the face as flat as possible and making the eyes bigger. Of course one can play with the style and how far to push the details which will give different effects. I chose to add a good number of facial details but using very light tonal changes that are noticeable but that are not very abrupt and still keep the coloring style a bit flat. As for the eyes I decided to keep the main shape and colors intact but made them bigger and enlarged the eyelashes a bit.
This study was done using a photo from Momoko Tsugunaga’s last photobook. Happy Birthday Momochi, thank you for everything you have done. Even now your work still makes everyone happy. And this of course includes me. Now that more media is becoming available to us overseas fans and that I can understand a bit more Japanese, I have so much media that I can now enjoy for the first time. It’s a shame my skills were not good enough back when you were still active. Although I love that not only did you have a goal in life (as a teacher), but you accomplished it on top of all your idol activities. The motivation you emanate is absolutely stunning. I truly hope that you are doing well and enjoying life. I can only hope that my art reaches you and makes you even just a fraction of the happiness you have given me.

I finally got around to painting Simone from Nier Automata. It was much easier than I thought it would be, although it did take me about two days and change. Could have finished it yesterday but decided to take a break and start fresh today. All that was left to paint were the accessories corpses which were easy to do with a couple of steps but since the amount of them is 5 and a section of a sixth one, it did eat up a bit of time.
All the painting was done using Corel Painter although I did do a silhouette painting of Simone with Photoshop so that I wouldn’t have to worry about getting out of the lines. This really does increase the speed at which I can just paint and add details without worry of having to erase later. Although that method does also take a bit of time. Using the bucket tool would speed up the silhouette process a good bit but some of my linework has open areas. Though I guess I could make a copy of the linework layer and close them off using a digital brush. I’ll try that out on my next piece.
When I did finish painting, I used PhotohShop to play around with the values and saturation. First I decided to remove the line work from the curtains. Then playing around with the Layer Blending mode I moved the layer containing my line art from multiply to screen and it brightened the whole painting up in a very vibrant way. I really love the way the colors jump out. I should probably experiment more with the other Layer Blending modes.
Will you accept Simone’s invitation to dance?

Ahh finally, my favorite season has begun. Some days have already started to have lower temperatures but it’s still fluctuating quite a bit. Any way, things have been quite busy lately so I just made a quick painting to commomerate fall. Although I wish to make more. Oh wait Inktober starts tomorrow. I guess my time will be taken over by that for a month. The painting is a study of this photo of Sayu: https://www.instagram.com/p/CFE1mDOlsl4/
Hope you guys like it.

Right now I’m in a Hello Project art mood, I can’t help but want to draw the members whenever I want to try out a new style. But I figured I should try to draw some new subjects, so I was looking through my reference folders and decided on drawing a Honda CR-X which I quite like. Once I had the line art done I decided to try out a new shading style which consists of just laying it down with parallel lines. I quite liked the aesthetic of this style. But once I was done I wasn’t too sure what else I should do with it.
Then I started thinking about maybe implementing someone in front of the car. Then it hit me, I could use that Sayu picture I drew where she has short hair. Once I cleaned up the background I resized Sayu so that she would fit the size of the CR-X and well… I really love the way it came out. I guess things were just meant to be. Somehow that short hair and hat make her fit that racer look.

It’s kind of a shame I didn’t do this one for Airi’s birthday but I was quite busy so it couldn’t be helped. This drawing was done in April 17 of 2019. I tried painting it on the 23rd using the reference picture as a guide for the colors as well. But it didn’t end well. The line art was just not working correctly with the painting. So over all it looked quite unnatural and weird. I then tried again on the 25th after I got frustrated and made the colors simpler and more anime like in an effort to make the lineart work better. But the result wasn’t much better. I just had too much trouble trying to blend them together. Well, after a year of countless hours of painting I decided to give it another try. I won’t lie, I still had that trauma of not being able to paint it correctly but the only way to find out is to just go ahead and do it. Annoyingly I did have some problems when I started painting it. Seeing as the line work was pretty dark and plentiful (when it came to the hatching) it just didn’t look right. I tried flat colors thinking that would work but after three tries I had to stop and rethink everything. The next day though I finally decided to paint it the way I have been painting lately. But this time I decided to make the linework lighter, I left it at around 65% of the darkness. Also, this time I decided to try and not look at the reference photo and just paint it the way I believed would work. Also, since most of my paintings have been coming out quite light (in terms of color and values), I decided to go for a more vibrant and deeper color pallette. And well, I really like the result.
I have noticed I have been working mainly with the warm colors in the yellow and red range, but whenever I try to do another color scheme I mess it up or it just doesn’t look right. I want to try cool colors for my next piece.

This was originally drawn in September 28, 2018. I also painted it beforehand on October 1st, 2018 (seen here, quite embarrassing looking at it now).
I didn’t quite like the way I painted it the last time. So on April 29, 2019 after practicing with color and painting I decided to give it another try. At that point I stumbled upon the works of Takato Yamamoto. I fell in love with his work and use of simple colors to create amazing pieces. That’s when I decided to try and paint Booette in a simple color scheme with a minimal amount of colors. Although the styles are no where near the same and I was still learning about how colors interact with each other, I really liked the way it turned out. I wanted to add more color to it, but I stopped my self as best I could. Now that I feel more confident with color I wonder how it would turn out?

Today’s Pixiv theme is native dress so I chose a typical Mexican one specifically from the state of Durango. Had a bit of more time today so I shaded it a bit. Since I did this one on the move I used a Pentel EnerGel ball point pen. It’s quite good, thin and the ink flows out quite well. But I can’t erase with it since the ink smears. I gave it about an hour to dry out but it would still smear, quite a shame.

A while ago now (wow 4 years ago ∑(゚ロ゚〃)) Sayumi was rumored to have cut her hair short which was a big deal since she had always had her beautiful long and natural hair colored hair. As it turns out it was I believe a wig where Sayu and the other Momosu members had different hairstyles that they didn’t use.
And man let me tell you, she looked absolutely amazing. I was surprised by how short they decided to go with the hairstyle but it fit her really well.
For this piece I had decided to give the maru pen nib a try but it was so small and stiff so I couldn’t really get it to work. I had no choice but to give up since it was getting really late. In the end I used my G nib and some of my other pens. It went well for the most part but I feel I messed a bit on her chin and lower head. I could have played a bit more with the values and I’m pretty sure it would look much better. But overall I liked the way the piece turned out.
Here is the reference picture used:
I really want to give it another shot and do another one traditionally.
Here is the process:
That’s it for now.
