This is the colored version of the ink drawing I made of Rin Shima which can be seen here.
I decided to do something a bit different in that I wanted to see if I could just modify some reference pictures. I wanted to convey the feeling of accomplishing the goal of reaching a destination and embarking to the next one. As I was painting the raindrops, I decided to add a drop on Shima’s finger which I felt really fit. Because I decided to follow the reference picture a bit too closely, but I guess it was a happy mistake.
I had been reading the manga for a while now, but was surprised to learn just how big Yuru Camp is in Japan. That makes me rather happy. I actually went camping last summer. I couldn’t help but remember Yuru Camp. For my first artwork of this series, I picked Rin Shima. I quite like how dependable and independent she is.
This is the colored version of the line art I made for Don Ramon, a character of “El Chavo del 8”. Kind of looks like a Mexican version of Xehanort. I like the way the digital painting meshed with the ink hatching.
I wasn’t paying too much attention but Isako was wearing a bikini underneath, because the reference picture I have is a bit too pixelated I thought it was lace underwear.
While looking through my references I came upon a picture that had Don Ramon (a character from “El Chavo Del 8”, my favorite one) and Fujiwara no Mokou. This picture compared both of their expressions and grins which I found very funny.
this is the picture that I’m talking about:
And here is the drawing:
On another note, it seems like posting Pixiv links here no longer shows the full image, but I just found out I can upload images to Pinterest and they do show fully here. So Just might start doing that from now on.
While I was painting, I took that opportunity to also fix some issues regarding the sizes of hands, arms and head sizes (among other things). This time I didn’t use a reference for the colors aside from just looking at what the Kuroki residence looks like and modified the colors based on the color theme that I decided to go for. Looking at the cover art for chapter 183, it seems like the typhoon completely soaked Tomoko and Yuri. With that in mind, I decided to make Yuri have wet clothes as well. Rainy season will be starting soon or it has begun in some places, so I think this piece will fit that well.
A painting that I painted last minute. Was a bit busy but I just barely made it. Hope you guys had a great Earth day. Hopefully everyone is still protecting her. I’ve had the idea that Master Asia from G Gundam and Earth chan would pair up nicely (those who have seen G Gundam know why). I don’t blame Master Asia for his decision to execute his plan. I mean, who wouldn’t want to protect her at all costs.
The painted version of the inked drawing I made a year ago.
Inked version:
I had two options that I could use to color, the line art or the inked version. In this case, I went for the inked version. Because of this, I decided to go for a more flat style. I decided to have a red background, so the colors were based off of that. While I was painting, I was reminded of a problem that this drawing had. Her right eye (which is on our left). It was misaligned and a bit too low, which I feel was exemplified more when I painted Lin Lin.
On April 8th there was a twitter challenge to redraw the character from a “How to draw Manga” book. The book they were talking about was a different one that I didn’t use my self. When I grew up, I used a the version distributed here in North America by Digital Manga Distribution. I know that the whole point of the challenge was to try and redraw that character, which is… well look at him yourself:
But I was thinking more in terms of retrying to draw a cover that I had once tried to draw when I was a kid. I didn’t quite get the contents of the book themselves, I was more interested in the cover art done by Kazuaki Morita.
In the end, I actually ended up finding that drawing I made years ago:
Man, that reversed hand is just…
Here is the current attempt:
The background music/sounds are from old trailers that I tended to hear from anime that I rented from my local library. People from my generation will know exactly what I’m talking about. Luckily, there are people online that are uploading these now classic anime history. Much like how AnimeCollective is doing. Link to each of the songs used and their respective trailers are below.
“Yumemiru Ai Tenshi” by by Ai tenshi densetsu Wedding Peach Trailer from ADV Films:
Media Blasters Trailer from Twin Signal:
“Wake Up” by Chisato:
“Treat or Goblins” by Megumi Hayashibara:
“Soramimi Cake” by Oranges & Lemons:
“Yuzurenai Negai” by Naomi Tamura:
“Carnival Babel” Takada Band:
I ended up only watching two of these anime. Blue Seed and Azumanga Daioh. I’m surprised I still haven’t seen Magic Knight Reyearth.
This is a double feature of sorts. I will be doing two types of painting on this drawing of Goku which has been drawn with ink. I first used watercolors to paint Goku and then I painted him again digitally using Corel Painter 2020. The time between each was very noticeable. The traditional painting took and the digital painting took me only . I really have to think about how I advance after every movement. Meanwhile with digital painting, I seem to have more experience and I can make as many mistakes as I want since I can undo right away. But I guess that doesn’t completely transfer over to traditional. Although I can go as detailed as I want, it might be better if I develop a simpler style like Little Thunders which can be so versatile but not overworked.
This painting has made it clear that I should practice more with watercolors. One other thing I remembered, don’t ink your drawing if you will be using watercolors on it (this is only if the inks aren’t waterproof). Otherwise they will smudge when painting. Instead, go over the lines by pressing hard on them using a pencil (I mean I know this, I don’t know why I didn’t remember). Then erase everything. If done correctly, the lines will be visible even when painting over them. One you are done painting, the line art process can finally be done. This can be done with ink, color pencils or more watercolors.
I just noticed, but this drawing was done almost a year ago. And it has been painted for almost a couple of weeks now. But I kept pushing it back. Maybe I should upload every day instead of only on weekdays. But I do plan on making videos on things beside the speed paints as well, so I’ll see how my schedule ends up looking before I make a decision.
I went for a flat colring style this time. Hmm… Metal Bat looks a bit like Dracula…
A bit of a late upload. I was planning on uploading some of the work I had lined up but when I was on twitter I noticed that #HowToDrawMangaRedraw was trending. The one being redrawn is from a book done by Katy Coope. But the one I grew up with was by Ryo Toudo. Looking inside the book, the cover artist is Kazuaki Morita. I really love his style. Man, this cover really brings back memories of when I was first getting into anime and was amazed by the selection of media that our local library carried. I won’t lie, I didn’t quite get the contents of the book back in the day. I mainly got it for the cover and tried to draw them. Thinking about it now, I might have that drawing stored in backpack that contains all my old work. If I remember correctly, I put the thumbs in the wrong positions. I’ll upload it tomorrow. There was another cover that I really liked, maybe I’ll give that one a try as well (also tomorrow).
Update (4/9/21) – Couldn’t find that old drawing I was talking about, I did find a lot of rather embarrassing ones though… If I find it though I’ll post it here.
(Update 4/19/2021) – Found it, you can see it here: ( •̀ᄇ• ́)ﻭ✧
