A redo of painting I did back in March 2020. I only did a couple of touch ups of the background and changed some of the lighting and color. The main changes were made to Terry in terms of the values and hues. The main part I mainly spent repainting were his arms.
The original version was uploaded back in November 2020, but I feel that it was lacking. I now feel a bit more confident to go back to it and update it with my current skills. Not only did I change some colors but I changed the sleeves and chest area. The background was also touched up. The right eye (what appears to us as the left eye) was drawn too far down the face so Athena looked a bit deformed. Aside from that, I also changed the gaze so it appeared that she was looking at us. I should seriously actually render paintings more, I’ve been leaving them too rough.
Original can be seen here:
Aside from seeing the original piece, you can learn what inspired me for this particular painting.
My brother told me about this character from Skullgirls on Saturday who he said I should try to paint. When I saw the release trailer of the character I was getting some really strong Creamy Mami vibes. Surely it was at least one of the inspirations. While I was searching for references I found out that Amazon Prime has this series which is awesome. The character herself (Annie) seems like a really good character. Her attacks are really fun to look at. And it was through that, that a lot of the anime influences were showcased. Including Dragon Ball.
When it came to painting Athena I was imagining some colors I had seen in what I think was a promotional video of Sonoko Kawai. But when I was trying to find that video I failed. More than likely it got deleted or it might have been someone else but I’m pretty sure it was Sonoko. This is one of the reasons I have started to just back up any videos that I like and that interest me. With that option out of the question I remembered I had some JR Christmas commercials that had similar colors to what I wanted. I ended up using the commercial featuring Eri Fukatsu. Getting the skin tone correctly took a couple of tries since I hadn’t used it before. I should definitely play around with such lighting more.
Before I begin, I would like to apologize for taking a week off. I was working on a very important project and it took me alot more than I expected. But now that I am back I will be uploading videos as much as I can. starting of course with the requests.
To start things off I will be drawing Black Star. Now I was only given the name Black Star so hopefully I got the right character. When searching the internet for references I got a lot of diversity of images, seeing as this black star had the highest amount of appearence (for the anime catergory anyway). I went ahead and drew this guy. I had heard of Soul Eater before but have not read nor seen the anime until just this week. I gotta say the artwork is interesting. I really liked the halloween motif that the background carries, but like most manga and anime’s these days, it seems to rely alot on fan service (I know that isn’t a bad thing, but I seriously prefer good story to fan service any day). The story isn’t too bad, I guess it is mostly for laughs but I just didn’t get too into it after reading the first volume. I’ll check at least two more volumes and see where it goes from there, after all, most series start off slow and rough until eventually they begin to pick up speed and get amazingly good.
