Snowy Steps background

A winter background for a painting that I pretty much have finished. But I might edit certain details when I come back to it. For the last couple of days where I live has been snowing and going below zero degrees Fahrenheit. It really feels like winters this year.

Mountain Snow Man Background

Mountain Snow Man Background

This is a RE:do of an old painting that had some really good potential but was quite rough. I changed the aspect ratio and added more details that I thought would work well. The mountains were quite different than the anime in the old version. I wonder why I changed them? So in this version I made them closer to how they are supposed to look like.

Feral Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex

I recently got to finally see Iron Blooded Orphans. It’s an amazing anime but really punches you in the gut with all the tragedies. It really shows the calamities that come from war and from pushing things too far without reason and the consequences that come from that. If for whatever reason you also haven’t seen it, give it a try. It’s well worth it. Just be prepared to tear up throughout.

On the other side of the coin, you have to admit that Gundams are freakin cool. And Barbatos has become one of my new favorite Gundams. The addition of his tail was such a cool touch. And the alaya-vijnana was such a great addition to the series. It was like Kaio Ken in Dragon Ball Z. What I like about this power ups is that they have limitations and repercussions when used. That makes their usage even more powerful and suspenseful. When I heard the name Barbatos I thought they meant barbarian which I feel fits Mikazuki Augus’s fighting style. But later my brother told me that was the name of a demon (the literal definition of the word barbatos is bearded by the way). Which would make sense why in season two they referred to him as a devil and his pointy chin design.

I wanted to see more of Barbatos in a snowy landscape, thus this painting. This might be the last winter painting for a while, now that we are coming into spring.

Freezing Background WIP

This week has been something… Somehow I was able to make progress on this painting though. Here is the background for now. We have been having waves of strong winter storms lately where I live, and it seems like more are coming on the way. Winter this year has been living up to it’s name (and the end of the last).

I’ll upload the finished painting on Monday if all goes well.

Guts Frozen Quest

The original idea was to have Guts in a frozen scenery, but as I was painting the background I decided to add in Casca and Puck. This scene would be taking place right after their encounter with Griffith and Zodd, I was wondering if adding more layers would slow down my tablet but it had no problems what so ever. I guess it was just the canvas size that was giving me problems…

Guts Frozen Quest Background WIP

Currently working on a painting that I had thought up last year. It’s still a bit rough at the moment, but the main idea has pretty much been painted out using my Surface Pro 5.

So I had bought a used Surface Pro so that I could paint on the go but rarely used it because it couldn’t keep up with the settings I use on my desktop. The canvas size was too large I found out. When I halved the size to around 2500 to 3500 the Surface is actually quite capable. I can’t believe that was all I need to do so that I could use it…

Domon Winter

It surprisingly didn’t take me too long to paint Shining Gundam and Domon, along with their reflections and snow. Checking mountains in parts of Japan, there are actually quite a lot of types of shapes. Including the pointy ones that are common where I’m currently at. So I just modified them a bit.

Shining Gundam was the main focus and what took the longest for this segment of the painting. The main form and base colors were easy to choose From there I tried to make out the form to showcase the most prominent forms. But since I wanted to emphasize that the Gundam is far away, I made sure to use more muted colors and as little value changes as I thought were needed. Then came the snow. I felt a bit bad about covering some areas with snow and water, but I feel that really ties it all together. As for the reflections I used the same techniques as with the torii, but I made sure to add highlights to create waves moving away from Shining Gundam as it rises up.

There were a couple of ideas about where to place Domon. Walking in the frozen ground, atop a small boat or standing on the torii. But ultimately I came upon the idea to have him leaping towards it. This I feel really fits the fantastical elements of G Gundam after all.

I made two versions, one where it’s all quiet and peaceful and another where snow is falling. Although I do like the snow, I think it looks better where it isn’t present.

Work in Progress I D Mountains

I’m currently working on a new painting before I try to make one or two for Valentines. I’ve actually been planning to make a painting of this sort for… damn. A couple of years now. I’m surprised it took me this long to finally give it a shot. The background is mostly done. I’m actually quite a bit ahead of this but I quite like the atmosphere of where the painting is at this point. Although I can render the painting further, I wonder if that will detract from the focal subjects. So for now, I will leave it mostly as it is.

This is the reference photo of the background, modified to have snow of course:

I just did an image search to find the original creator and it seems to be from a photo manipulator that put different assets together to create this. I found it strange that the pine trees and mountains looked somewhat Western. Now I know why.

With that in mind, I will go back and edit a couple of the trees so that they fit Japanese ones. Among other changes. I wonder if there is a place in Japan that will actually fit this scenery?

The Toori is actually painted already, along with the reflection. I’m surprised at how easy it was to emulate. You guys will have to wait till next time to be the judges though. Luckily I won’t have to edit that part of the painting.

Sayu-Mask

Despite the end of last year being quite dry, the start of this year has given us quite a bit of snow. I quite like the athmosphere this creates which is why I decided to use it for the painting this time around. The line art was done for Inktober 2021 day 27 which can be seen here:

The model for this painting is Sayumi Michishige. I really love the outfit and colors. I debated on how I wanted Sayu’s colors to be overall. Light and faded, or darker, affected by the scenery. I opted for the darker route.

Reference photo of Sayu can be seen here (7th Photo):
