Momochi 80s Shoujou

A bonus painting for Momochi’s birthday. Reference used was from her blog photos. I wanted to try out a cute shoujo 80s anime style. Happy birthday Momochi.

Momochi Sunset Study

I recently saw an artist that worked with light colors and used that as an aesthetic advantage. Usually when I paint, almost every time it looks really light so I worried whether it would look well to others or not. So this time I have decided to just paint like usual and try to not overwork the painting too much. What I did want to try though is a version where I just painted and let the colors separate the whole piece as a whole. In the second version I added some lighting to the hair, darkened the lips and added some linework. Personally I prefer the original version more although I do like the the linework version as well. I went for a semi realistic/anime style. This mainly entails that one keeps the detail on the face as flat as possible and making the eyes bigger. Of course one can play with the style and how far to push the details which will give different effects. I chose to add a good number of facial details but using very light tonal changes that are noticeable but that are not very abrupt and still keep the coloring style a bit flat. As for the eyes I decided to keep the main shape and colors intact but made them bigger and enlarged the eyelashes a bit.

This study was done using a photo from Momoko Tsugunaga’s last photobook. Happy Birthday Momochi, thank you for everything you have done. Even now your work still makes everyone happy. And this of course includes me. Now that more media is becoming available to us overseas fans and that I can understand a bit more Japanese, I have so much media that I can now enjoy for the first time. It’s a shame my skills were not good enough back when you were still active. Although I love that not only did you have a goal in life (as a teacher), but you accomplished it on top of all your idol activities. The motivation you emanate is absolutely stunning. I truly hope that you are doing well and enjoying life. I can only hope that my art reaches you and makes you even just a fraction of the happiness you have given me.

Gina Nina BoomBox

This is a study using an old ad from Sanyo. The ink drawing was first drawn for inktober 2020 day 04. For this piece I wanted to try out a super simple painting with no shadows or lighting, but as I kept working on it, I decided to just go ahead and try adding more details just to compare and contrast. To add a bit more of color to the simple painting style, I decided to use color burn for the line art which worked really well with the static and colors used on Gina since it reacted in very interesting ways. I wanted to go for a more pop art look so I went with more saturated and vibrant colors which really makes it pop.

When I first saw the reference ad used I thought it was Phoebe Cates, but as I was working I noticed that there was a name on the ad in the left bottom corner that spelled out Gina Nana. When I searched that up, no much came up about it except 2 or 3 other ads with the same model. When I searched up her name using Katakana more photos and ads came up. So yes, this model is actually a different person by the name of Gina Nana. It seems she was a model for Sanyo for a while during their cassette electronic campaign. The reference I used was from 1985.

Doctor Tao Pai Pai

It’s already a couple of days old now, but I really wanted to draw Tao Pai Pai for a while now so I thought this would be a great opportunity. There’s an image of a doctor who is the secretary of health for Nuevo León (a Mexican State).

He not only looks like Tao Pai Pai but the posture is also pretty close. Since he is currently in the effort of working on the Corona Virus efforts I figured a painting of him about to just eradicate it would be a good idea. At first I thought I wanted to make the Corona virus as someone like General Blue but decided to just create a creature instead.

The Artist Avatar Challenge DarkCloudXERO

My entry to the DeviantArt contest. Tried to include all my current art styles into this piece, both traditional and digital. Background is fully digital, painted with Corel Painter. The astrological clock, character and ink jar backpack, g pen and brush were done using Photoshop. The pixel maid was done using Pro Motion NG and then enlarged using Photoshop. The skeleton was drawn using my g pen and the tiger was painted using ink. The text was drawn using Photoshop.
I painted my current workspace which I used as the background, but most of it was covered up by the front layers and also cut off.
Apparently if Scorpio is in the Moon Sun position, it indicates that they are “creative, intense and mysterious”. Which I thought would fit in well with the theme.
Luckily I read the instructions again so I redid the VHS distortion by hand which does the trick quite well and has some cool painted effects from the I believe it was the pastel brush.

The character himself was actually the element that took me the longest to paint since I was just coming up with each section as I went along. Life can be hard and it can chain us down, both in terms of time, physical methods and psychologically. But art is a way that can help us break those restraints and let our emotions and creativity take shape, letting us create anything that’s inside our minds or that of others.

With that in mind, I wanted to create a painting where I could use my art tools to bring my creations to life and help free me from my limitations and problems. The tools would change in size depending on the application and would revert to their original size when I needed to put them away. The ink jar I felt would be carried as a backpack.

The reason the skeleton and the tiger are splattering ink is because they have been newly painted/drawn so they are not fully dry yet.

Hope you guys like it.

Corel Painter 2021 Illustration

I named it “Panzadores” because I combined pan (bread) and cazadores (hunters). What if there was a world where a witch put a curse on sweet bread and they came alive. The more delicious the bread, the stronger and more dangerous they are. Thus hunters have to be hired in order to defeat and have a chance to actually taste them?

This is a contest entry for the illustration category of the 2021 Corel Painter Contest. I made it just in time, the deadline is on Feb 19.

Pan Mexicano

This will eventually be a part of a contest entry I want to enter to the Corel Painter contest. But for now I will upload the current background.

Ranma the Jet Saotome

Today’s Pixiv theme is suspenders, which automatically reminded me of the character played by Benny the Jet Urquidez on the film “Wheels on Meals”. What I loved about the 80s was that they had the same love for Hong Kong movies which is always an amazing treat when I find out what they are referencing as I watch an episode. Ranma basing a whole lot of it’s aesthetic in all types of martial arts movies but having that fun aspect that was seen in 80s movies thanks in large part to Jackie Chan. Truth be told I was planning to just paint Benny but I soon just had the urge to paint Ranma. I really like these light pastel colors.

Corel Painter 2021 Contest entry

My entry to the Corel Painter 2021 art contest. They had three categories; Illustration, Fine Arts and Photo Art. I guess this most closely resembles the fine art category so that’s what I ended up choosing.

The painting itself was done almost entirely with just the oily bristle brush except in some sections where I used the flat color brush but very rarely in some sections to try out working with some really dark sections. As it turn out, once we reach a certain amount of darkness, the brush doesn’t blend any more and whatever tint is used works in rather weird ways. It was quite an interesting thing to find out. But I gotta say, now I know why old classical artist used a black or really dark background. The colors used on the subject pop out much more and it makes it much easier to manipulate the values.

The subject is my dog. A couple of years ago now he had a bit of an accident and had to have one of those dog cones. Somehow he looked like he was wearing a ruff collar and looked very dignified. So ever since then, I decided that whenever I felt I was good enough I would paint him like he was royalty. Looking online it seems that this isn’t a novel idea although they are focused more on making parody paintings of actual paintings. For mine, I wanted my dog to actually be a dog wearing royal clothes that drape over him.

Karin Miyamoto Self Portrait

Recently Karin uploaded an instagram video of her taking a self portrait which was really cute and funny which I wanted to recreate in pixel form. She looks like an 80s boss with her outfit and pose (a fun one).
