Momoko Tsugunaga Caligraphy brush test

Since I had some time yesterday, I decided to try out my new calligraphy brush. The model that will be the first to try it out is Momochi, using a photo from her last photobook as reference. I’m surprised at how accurate the brush the brush can be. I really enjoyed the experience. For this painting I decided to do it freehand which can be pretty dicey but it does speed up the process by quite a lot. And sure enough it did, but I did do one mistake. I put the mouth and nose too low so I made the decision to alter that using Photoshop.

Momochi Hiding

Today I decided to paint using the Corel Painter real watercolors again. This time I decided to use different brush presets and they definitely act differently. But I guess that is to be expected. Looking at the end result, they give off that watercolor and Copic look. I used the inktober day 26 line art of Momochi’s last photobook. I wanted to emulate the coloring style of classic manga.

I really want to draw more of Momochi. Luckily the Country Girls dvd magazine has plenty of references of her interacting with the snow. And I really want to paint her in the red outfit from her last photobook. But before that, I want to make a New Year’s piece, I already have an idea so it’s just a matter of doing it.

Sebun Keeping at it

A quick drawing today.

You know, it’s a shame that Seven was pretty much forgotten after she was introduced. I really enjoyed the addition of her character and I would even go on to say she is my favorite character. They could have done some interesting stories with her and Legoshi but I guess things just end up that way sometimes.
For this drawing I wanted to convey a melancholic scene but one of hope since despite Seven’s hardships she didn’t give up and continued to move forward. I drew and inked this drawing traditionally and then added the hatching and screentone using Clip Studio.

Otona na no yo Saki Shimizu

I wanted to once again give the 90s anime aesthetic another try today. I painted Saki using Photoshop and the background with Corel Painter. For the texture that makes it look like it’s being shown in an old tv I used the Photoshop filter (I believe it was noise) which gave me just the right textured I wanted. I could have gotten away with it if I had muted the colors a bit more but this works even better.

Saki’s outfit and dance moves are quite amazing in this pv. I wonder if she would ever consider doing a solo career? I’m just glad she is still active online though, I really enjoy seeing her Kendama progress.

The Child Cassette

I finally got a chance to start watching the Mandalorian. And it’s just as good as everyone was saying. Of course Baby Yoda was just as adorable as people were saying as well. Actually, he is even more adorable than I could have imagined. Now I understand why so many people love him so much. While looking through some of my reference photos I came upon an ad for the Panasonic RQ-JA160 Cassette player that featured Yoda.

I thought it would be a good parody. I’m not too far into the lore of the Mandalorian but surely they are still in the past if we use our timeline as the base mark right? So this is future technology that is being featured. I decided to use the white model since I prefer that color for my electronics. And I think this Cassette player really looks good in white. Perhaps when I get a chance I will revisit this painting and add some font to play around with the parody aspect more.

Shy cat Miyabi

During this year’s Halloween, Miyabi cosplayed in different costumes. One of them was of a cute cat girl. For one of the photos she uploaded she had a really embarrassed and shy face that caught my attention and I wanted to try and draw/paint it. Looking at several clips of Miyabi it seems she has had various occasions like these where her shyness shows through. I really think that’s one of her charm points.

Athena Asamiya Idol

When it came to painting Athena I was imagining some colors I had seen in what I think was a promotional video of Sonoko Kawai. But when I was trying to find that video I failed. More than likely it got deleted or it might have been someone else but I’m pretty sure it was Sonoko. This is one of the reasons I have started to just back up any videos that I like and that interest me.
With that option out of the question I remembered I had some JR Christmas commercials that had similar colors to what I wanted. I ended up using the commercial featuring Eri Fukatsu. Getting the skin tone correctly took a couple of tries since I hadn’t used it before. I should definitely play around with such lighting more.

Nishimura and Takada

I just started reading the manga “The Clueless Transfer Student Is Assertive”. It’s such a cute story that just makes me smile after every chapter. A positive manga like this is really good every once in a while. I really like the way Takada diffuses the bullying through his overly positive worldview. These type of characters that just speak their mind are kinda rare nowadays. So it’s really fun seeing Nishimura’s reactions every time. the artwork is made up of simple yet super cute elements. I really like the rounded faces and angular body. Something about that just works and reminds me of old school manga. It was really fun drawing it (and quite simple as well).

Inktober 2020 21 Sleep Buono!

Last year for day 24 of inktober I had given this drawing a try, although I had modified it a bit. Since the prompt for today was sleep, I decided to try once again. Since it is a close up I was able to add a bit more detail to the drawing. Despite having a blueray with the Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! PV the scene where they are napping is a bit blurry due to some effects they used. I had stitch different parts together to get the scene together. Buono! is so nostalgic…

Inktober 2020 20 Goth Lolita

I wanted to do a drawing that was done entirely with hatching and cross hatching. Looking through my references I decided to draw @yu_ra_ne , I believe she is a model? But she has a lot of beautiful photos that I could choose from. I decided to go with one where she was dressed as a goth lolita since it would better fit into the Halloween aesthetic.

Inktober 2020 18 Yukino and Yui

Since were are past half way through this month, we are closer to Halloween now. I’ve been re-watching “My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected”. I never got to finish it when it came out. So hopefully this time I actually get to finish it. I’m really enjoying it (currently in season 2). In season 1 episode 8, Yui and Yukino both dressed in cosplay. The costumes used are what I used for reference in this drawing.

Inktober 2020 13 Saki Shimizu

Today was a rough one but I managed to make some time to draw. Today I decided to draw one of the planned drawings I talked about a couple of days ago. I had to composite many reference pictures that I had screen captured before October I believe. I was unsure if I should draw her at a closer view or not (if I had I would have had more time to add more details and ink/hatch the drawing). But I really wanted to draw Saki’s outfit from Otona na no yo! She looks like a really cute doll. Personally I believe she had the best outfit by far for that music video. While I was looking at the screenshots of the mv (it took me a while but I captured all scenes where Saki appeared, most of the video), I got to compare everyone’s movements during the dance scenes. She can really move. Her dance moves are powerful and cute, I don’t really know how to describe them but the flow and execution are definitely top notch. No wonder she is the captain.
