I recently talked about how my monitors were not calibrated correctly so my colors and values were off. I’m going back and trying to fix some of the previous paintings I have done. Miyabi dressed as a maid is of course one of those paintings.
A redo of painting I did back in March 2020. I only did a couple of touch ups of the background and changed some of the lighting and color. The main changes were made to Terry in terms of the values and hues. The main part I mainly spent repainting were his arms.
The original version was uploaded back in November 2020, but I feel that it was lacking. I now feel a bit more confident to go back to it and update it with my current skills. Not only did I change some colors but I changed the sleeves and chest area. The background was also touched up. The right eye (what appears to us as the left eye) was drawn too far down the face so Athena looked a bit deformed. Aside from that, I also changed the gaze so it appeared that she was looking at us. I should seriously actually render paintings more, I’ve been leaving them too rough.
By pure luck I managed to see Karin’s Instagram live celebrating her 23rd birthday. It’s funny that at the end she messed up the finger positions and was accidently showing 32. I debated making two more pieces showcasing this but I ran out of time. I wonder why the videos get mirrored? I’ve noticed that many photos and videos are in this format.
Today’s painting is of King Piccolo Sr.. While I had most of the painting done, it felt a bit empty or missing something. I remembered about the variation of the thickness of lines (I keep forgetting about that…). That I feel made it look better. After thinking about it for a while I came upon the idea that I should add his hands holding a dragon ball. But since this is now younger Piccolo it wouldn’t make sense to have him holding an active Dragon Ball so I made it into a stone version of it. I finished it off by adding some static at the end.
I wanted to make an action piece and after watching some Mr. Karate videos I found the subject. The background is a mixture of Takuma Sakazaki’s dojo and a dojo from the film “Fighter in the Wind” (a movie about Masutatsu Ōyama whom Takuma is based on). Really wanted to recreate the lighting coming from the windows.
I wanted to go for a more vibrant look. I noticed that my latest paintings looked quite washed out. My monitor settings seems to have been giving me a false sense of values and colors… I just reset all the monitors so hopefully that will help me out in the coming pieces.
Its sad, but although I worked quite a bit on the background it isn’t visible at all. I think I will reuse it for something else so that it doesn’t go to waste.
This painting is done using the line art I made for this year’s inktober day 2. I didn’t really have a plan for how this painting would go but I eventually decided on setting it in twighlight and basing the color scheme through that. It felt a bit lonely with just the sky though, so I eventually started adding clouds and at some point some trees which are based on their home.
What would a date with Goku be? Would it just be like that episode where Homer from the Simpsons gets kicked out of the restaurant for eating all the food? I feel sorry for ChiChi.
Based on the drawing I made for this year’s Inktober for day 23. Because watercolor lifts the ink and makes the drawing really muddy, I traced it with my lightbox using only my pencil. I actually had to redo it twice because I was trying to erase the lines and graphite smudges before I started painting but then I couldn’t see the lines anymore… Erasing is ok on some papers, but not on the one I was using this time…
Luckily I still managed to finish the painting today despite a couple of setbacks. One of the biggest ones was the fear of messing up. It’s been a while since I last painted traditionally so that’s always a bit intimidating. But it’s always a matter of just starting. I almost messed it up right out of the gate since I didn’t completely clean the main brush I used (it still had some ink in it). The good things was that I could still lift up the affected area (it was the face…).
I really love watercolors. The look it has and versatility are just amazing.
I finally colorized this drawing. I had planned to do so sooner… but I finally got to it. What I had in mind was going for a Ukiyo-e style. I went for a simple painting style and then texturized with with some layers I overlaid upon it.
One of the great things about inktober is that I get to a lot of line art that I can paint. I have lots to choose from, but lets start with Mokocchi sporting her makeover done by Asuka when they first interacted.
