Waking Up Rei Ayanami

Here is the final part of this painting of Rei Ayanami. I took many rests as I was finishing it up due to various reasons but I’m glad I did because it gave me a chance to see it with new eyes. On top of that, at some point I finally began experimenting with the blending tool. The soft one is the one I eventually chose to use. For harder blending and separation of colors the sergeant tool is is my best tool. But for certain textures such as the skin I need softer blending sometimes.

Overall this was a fun painting to play around with.

Rei Ayanami Sweater line art

Line art originally done for Inktober 2022 day 7.

Can be seen here:

I didn’t like how I originally drew it, so before I inked/painted it I wanted to fix a couple of things. Mainly the face. It’s amazing how a couple of changes could make such a big differences.

Rei Ayanami grassy nap

There was something very comforting seeing Rei doing some farm work. It gave some really strong Ghibli vibes. I wanted a dreamlike aesthetic so I used really vibrant colors for this painting. Rei looks quite peaceful. In a way, this piece is the opposite of Asuka’s winter painting.

This painting was done using Corel Painter’s Sargent Brush and tapered oil brush.

Winter Asuka

Just yesterday we had some more snow, although it very well might be the last one of the season. That inspired me to paint who I believe is Asuka from the teaser trailers. Those living in Japan know for sure. I wonder when we’ll get a chance to see it over here in the States. I wonder what the rest of he outfit looks like? Seems like she has some type of a backpack. I quite liked the breath animation so I decided to include it in my painting.

Berserk Unit 02

I have been planning painting the other Eva units when they go berserk. This time though, I went for a complete digital painting. Rewatching the scene when Asuka activates the berserk mode is quite heart wrenching in all aspects. Specially since even then, she was completely overpowered and wrecked. Even now it’s hard watching her suffering that much. The end of Evangelion version is quite different from the rebuilds which I could also paint at some point, Although I would probably opt for a complete body since it has very interesting angles and poses. In this portrayal of the berserk scene in the End of Evangelion, I did a what if Asuka could over power the lance and destroy the mass produced Evas.

This painting was also done using the Real Tapered Wet Flat Brush, just as was done with Airi’s painting. Except for the background which was done using the Tapered Oils brush.
