Today is Meimi’s birthday so I wanted to draw her. Her making her solo show available during her birthday is great. That gave me the idea to draw her from a scene in the show. It was hard to choose though since she looked cute throughout it all.
It is now finally time to upload my color painting of Meimi Tamura. I’m glad I waited on uploading it because I made a few touches today. I think it’s time to read books about color theory so that I don’t just rely on instinct. Like last time, I also want to edit a video of the process for this painting. I’ll probably do a short and eventually figure out what I want to do for the longer video.
It’s day 4, I wasn’t too happy with yesterday’s hatching so I was a bit worried for today’s drawing. I decided to draw my own prompt today. I have started watching Omusubi, an NHK drama. The only reason I knew about it was because of Meimi Tamura. I was a bit worried that her role would be limited but luckily she has been a prominent supporting character. I hope it stays that way because her character has been hilarious. I hope this opens more roles for her. Though I selfishly want to hear new songs from her as well.
This time I went for simpler hatching which I’ve noticed works better. I’m also playing around more with what gets more details and what areas would benefit from empty spaces.
It’s time to reveal the main subject that corresponds to this background. It’s Meimi Tamura. The reference I used is from her music video Butai. I really love the song and music video it self. There are many scenes I want to give a try in painting but that will be for another time.
Here is the music video, do check it out:
We have come to the end of Spring, my second favorite season. I managed to make a few seasonal paintings to celebrate but I had more ideas that i didn’t get to do this time. Hopefully I will manage to do better next year. Next paintings will be about the Summer (my least favorite season due to the heat).
A while back Meimi had this cute hairstyle that I wanted to try drawing and painting. This time I went for a mixture of my style but also a flat anime style. I need to play with this style more.
Happy Birthday Meimi Tamura! Hope you have a great year.
This piece is based on the play Marigold in which Meimi Tamura plays the main role of Gerbera a Dhampir (a being born from a human and a vampire). It is quite a tragic and beautiful tale about a mother’s love. Meimi’s solo is absolutely beautiful and my favorite part of the play. If you get a chance do check it out. Luckily it was recorded and released in both dvd and blue ray. And some fans have created subtitles for the whole series it seems which is awesome for us international fans.
The whole drawing has been done both traditionally (the line art) and digitally (inking, hatching and combining two separate drawings). Meimi was drawn on one paper and the window on another. With the amount of details I wanted to add, I decided to do the inking digitally since I probably wouldn’t have finished it in time.
Planning, sketching, inking, hatching and everything else in one day was crazy. But, I got it done. With this, I only have one more day and Inktober is finished!
Surprise, another Meimi Tamura drawing. She uploaded a photo of her wearing a police uniform and I couldn’t resist drawing her. Assuming that the translation was done successful she wrote that the mission was safely a mission complete (I believe she was a police for the day). That phrase reminded me of the Metal Slug winning screen so I wanted to emulate that font.
I’m really liking using hatching in this style. It’s very flexible and looks very aesthetic.
Here is another music video of Meimi that you should check out:
There are so many drawings I want to do with Meimi as the subject. Her photos are cute, aesthetic and have this art feel to them. For this ink drawing I decided to play around with hatching and linework, trying to minimize full inking where possible. And I’m glad I did so because it gave it a really nice look. My maru pen is finally listening to me and doing exactly what I want. Now I can blend in thinner and thicker lines as appropriate.
If you haven’t listened to Meimi’s music do give it a try. I really want her to continue singing.
Day 30. Today is Meimi Tamura’s birthday! Well it was yesterday if we go by Japan time. To commemorate the occasion I drew Meimi. I have really been into her music lately. I really hope she continues to produce more music. In some of her Instagram posts she has been talking about fairies, thus today’s theme. I was short on time again, but I felt that it wouldn’t be good to upload the drawing as only the line art. So I pushed it rather close to midnight today in order to add line details and inking. There is a lot of detail so I hope that Meimi and the fairy are visible and stand out.
