I wasn’t too happy with the first version of my painting of Marin Kitagawa, it just didn’t pop. I wanted Marin to glow because of the sunlight coming from the window. Aside from that, I also added a couple of more details around the whole painting.
I’m really loving what they are doing with the anime adaptation. Its so beautifully designed and has a lot of attention to detail when animating movements. Episode 3 made a really good job of showcasing the struggle of artist dealing with deadlines and encountering a wall (in terms of one’s current skill level). I feel that whoever is directing this anime is of course putting a lot of emphasis on the fan service aspects but also to a lot of emotional moments and the artistic aspects that comes from cosplaying and doll making. I really do feel that there is a lot of love and care put in this project.
This painting is dealing with Gojou’s comment on Marin’s beauty. The animation sequence and facial expressions were really impactful. So of course I wanted to make a painting of this moment. I really like Gojou. Most protagonists in these types of stories are a little too annoying for me. But even though Gojou has a bit of social deficiencies, he is still portrayed as what a normal person would be. That assertiveness and confidence when it comes to his craft is also quite refreshing. That’s why I believe Marin falling for Gojou is a lot more believable than other series where the protagonist has the most beautiful girl falling for him for no reason. If you haven’t given this series a try, I really recommend it. The anime is a really great addition that actually amplifies the series.
For this painting I first painted the background then Goujou and Marin. Then I added some lighting. Although it I felt it looked good, after playing around with the layers on one of the lighting layers I came upon the realization of editing the values and saturation of Marin and Goujou. The more vibrant colors I felt looked much better than the colors I had before. The background was also edited slightly to fit better with the changes. Now it looks so warm and cozy…
This is the painted version of my Manbagi line art. I made the lighting a bit more reddish and darker to showcase the passage of time since the last drawing.
Today’s Pixiv theme was earphones, I wanted to make a winter painting. So I combined both ideas. The subject is Yuri Tamura. She is often seen wearing her earbuds so I felt this was a great fit. Although I can’t really tell since the manga is black and white, but her earbuds are most likely white huh? I felt black would fit better in this painting though. I wasted more time coming up with the concept than actually painting it feels like.
I added some snow to the platform but that’s probably cleaned up properly before it get’s piled up in big cities right? Oh well, let’s just call it artistic liberty.
Just when I was about to finish most of the painting I decided to add Yuri’s hand holding one of her earbuds. I think it adds more to the scene. One other thing to note is that when I do full digital paintings I feel they look good without outlines, but when I add them in they look better somehow. I’ll have to keep experimenting with this.
This painting is done using the line art I made for the first day of Inktober 2021. I kinda wanted a winter setting but the class setting kinda limited that. Even so, I really like the lighting that came from the window. I erased some sections of the lineart on Yuri but overall it was left unedited. I’ve notice another increase in speed when painting. Here’s to painting more throughout the year.
I really want to paint Tomoko in her “land mind” makeup…
I wanted to make an action piece and after watching some Mr. Karate videos I found the subject. The background is a mixture of Takuma Sakazaki’s dojo and a dojo from the film “Fighter in the Wind” (a movie about Masutatsu Ōyama whom Takuma is based on). Really wanted to recreate the lighting coming from the windows.
One of the great things about inktober is that I get to a lot of line art that I can paint. I have lots to choose from, but lets start with Mokocchi sporting her makeover done by Asuka when they first interacted.
My contest entry for the Punishing Gray Raven illustration contest. This painting is for the fan art category. While looking at the designs, I was really drawn to Nanami. It seems that at some point they changed her design from the promotional trailer of her and what is now Nanami Storm. I really like the cat ears motif so I decided to go for that version of her costume. When I finished painting and was getting ready to upload my entry I noticed that there was reference files of Nanami and the other characters from different angles to help in understanding their design. All in good quality… Because I didn’t notice this, I went around the internet and took low quality screenshots from Youtube videos. There is another category where I can design a different variant for one of the characters, haven’t yet decided if I will do it though I am tempted.
