Gojo Satoru and Iori Utahime In Shibuya

Originally I just wanted to paint Gojo. After catching up with the manga I now understand why people love him so much. But after painting him in, he looked so lonely. So I had to contemplate what to do or who to pair him with. Ultimately I knew one thing for sure, I didn’t want Suguru Geto in it. I personally really like the relationship he had with Iori, they look really fun together.

Next was how to pose Iori with Gojo. Seeing as I had already had him curled up, it just made sense to have Iori sitting on his back.

One of the things I worried about while painting this though was the cityscape. The buildings (some of them anyway) seemed to have been new in 2022 based on the Google Street View reference I used. Meaning the landscape would look completely different when Gojo and Iori were younger. But on the other hand, finding interesting locations from various angles would be a bit tough, especially period correct.

Kurapika’s Resolve

I need to catch up the where the manga is currently at. But the last time I was reading we were barely heading to the dark continent. I really like his suit look so I wanted to do a piece with it. Although I also like his traditional outfit. Perhaps I will do a future piece of him wearing it.

For this painting I wanted to practice with a blue setting thus choosing a cityscape at night. There are different ways I could have gone at it, but I ended up going with these colors. I’ll need to study more paintings so that it can become more natural for me. I made two versions, the normal painted version and another with lighting effects in both the silhouette being illuminated by the window and his scarlet eyes glowing.

Cityscape Background

This is the background for a drawing I made last year of Kurapika. To augment the background lighting I had a separate layer with Color dodge that seems to work quite well for both reflections and making light brighter and the surrounding of the lights and still keep the details of the painting.

I wonder how I will develop this technique in the future.
