I was looking at my references and came upon an ad by Ano promoting some earbuds. While researching them I found out there was a Frieren version. And that lead to this drawing. Sadly I messed up with the eyelashes. I used the wrong pen which was too thick. But part of the fun of Inktober is dealing with a permanent medium like ink. I could always come back to it at a later date.
I decided to change a couple of details not just for Frieren but also for the background since the last time I uploaded it. I just finished it at the time of uploading, so hopefully I won’t regret not giving it some time to rest on my mind.
I’m pretty tired today and time was limited so I decided not to ink or hatch it today. There are a couple of details I will have to fix at a later date, and I cheated a bit. I messed up on her cheek so I had to digitally white it out. Drawing those buildings took a long time and were such a pain. But now I have more ideas of how to draw them in the future. And next time they will be neater and follow the same perspective.
After weeks, I finally get to upload this painting of Frieren and Himmel. I was more worried about getting the right look of the lake and the reflections correctly. But I think I managed to do that. I wonder if I did the right thing making Himmel’s cape capable of covering his head. In the anime I never saw him do it, but all the amount of fabric makes it seem so. Which is why I decided to take some artistic liberties.
I wanted to create a fantastical feel with the setting, color and brush strokes. I’m getting close to what I’m imagining but I haven’t quite fine tuned it. Nothing I can do except to keep painting.
On another note, I am getting tempted to start collecting figures. Not only because they look so cool and beautiful but they would help out a lot as reference material since I could study them from different angles. Perhaps in the future.
Also, since I recently finished reading Dungeon Meshi. It’s time I read the Frieren manga. Can’t believe I forgot to do that.
I finally got to see Frieren last month (thanks to my brother for recommending it). I’m a bit late, but I’m glad I was because I got to binge watch it. The concept felt very fresh to me. What would a being that lives longer than humans feel in terms of time, activities and the importance of the relationships one develops or lack thereof. Now I need to start reading the manga.
Although seeing Frieren in the river was only but a small moment in the anime, I really liked the calm aesthetics of it. But to change it up a bit I wanted to try and get a different vantage point. and also try doing a cross section piece. I really enjoyed and learned a lot while working on this painting. Obviously I want to do more artwork based on the series in the future. There’s so much I want to paint and draw but only so much time available.
