There was a recent cute photo uploaded by yu_ra_ne on instagram that reminded me of Sakaki (from Azumanga Daioh) trying to pet cats. Which of course led me to make this painting of Sakaki petting Maya, the Iriomote Mountain Cat.
This is the photo of yu_ra_ne that I’m talking about, which I used for reference:
It’s been a while since I last made a painting of Macross. I came upon a reference picture of Akina Nakamori which I felt would translate well as a Lynn Minmey painting. I thought about changing the outfit but quite liked the aesthetic, so I decided to keep it. The reference picture I have didn’t allow me to find out what the car is, which made me decide to paint an MR2 in it’s stead.
I really like the introduction of Yamato. The last chapter I read was when she was introduced, I really have to get back to it. I’m really hoping she becomes part of the straw hat crew.
It’s been quite a while since I last used Copic markers. There is also a metallic gold pen that I had never tried. In this piece I was contemplating between painting this as either a more realistic style or a stylized one that emulated Buddhist paintings.
Sadly, scanning the finished painting I couldn’t get the color of the gold to pop out correctly. It came out really dark. So I had to edit those golden lines digitally. Which took quite a while… One other problem I ran into was dried up markers. I pushed them to the limit but they did leave streaks on the paper. I decided to leave it as such just to see what kind of effect it would have. Doing large areas is definitely better suited for watercolors.
This is the background for another painting in progress. I want to do more pieces that capture the rainy weather we are experiencing where I live and the green foliage that has bloomed because of it.
Happy Goku day. I can’t believe I just found out that May 9th is Goku Day. I didn’t have anything ready or planned, but luckily I had the line art of Goku celebrating that fits the occasion perfectly. Really like a gif of Goku and Krillin fighting during their younger days so I used that setting and colors for my painting.
This is going to be the background for a future piece. But I decided to take a bit of detour and come back to it a little later. I’ll decide then if I want to polish it a bit more (the background) or not. I am still thinking of the composition of the actual subjects though, so I might have to edit this background quite a bit. We’ll see.
I’m surprised I haven’t drawn Zoro before. Specially since he is my favorite One Piece character. Although to be fair, One Piece has so many good characters to choose from.
I came upon a photo of Yane wearing a yukata which I feel fits the spring quite well. I’m still not too sure how I will go about the next stage for this drawing, will I ink it, hatch it, or paint it? I haven’t quite decided that yet. I did add a bit of hatching already, but if I decide to do something different I could always edit it out later on.
This is the painted version of my drawing of Isako Washio. I can’t quite read the kanji for what the actual campaign she was modeling for in the reference picture I used, if you know what it is do let me know.
reference picture:
I quite liked the tan and shadows that compliment the lighting. I decided to have her in a beach as opposed to being indoors, so of course the lighting changed slightly to a brighter one. It’s been raining where I live quite often these past days so I was tempted to make it rainy in this painting as well. But I should do all types of weather types. Seeing as the temperature is also rising, going to the beach is not that out of place.
