Inktober 2023 Day 01 Karin Maaka

October and Inktober has arrived once again. I have some ideas of what I want to try drawing this year, but as for what the first drawing would be I couldn’t really come up with an idea. Looking through my references and trying to find this cosplayer that I forgot the name of, I came upon another account that reminded me of Karin from Karin or as we know it here in the states, Chibi Vampire. I really want to re read the series this month. It’s been a while since I have done traditional work. But when it comes to drawing, it definitely is much more natural and easier for me to do it traditionally. I wanted to use some hatching on this drawing but I forgot that my maru pen worked really poorly with the paper I used. I’ll have to have that in mind for future drawings.

If you haven’t read Karin, do check it out. I highly recommend it.

Kana Arima Cafe Visit

I watched Oshi no Ko quite a few weeks ago. I loved it. By far my favorite character is Kana. I really want to make make more paintings of her.

The weather is finally starting to change and so are the colors, even if ever so slightly where I live. I wanted to portray a cozy atmosphere with this painting. Thus the colors and location I chose.

In terms of the painting I liked playing with different lighting colors that happened due to the light sources coming from all around her. Lately I have been debating whether to keep the big anime eyes, or making them more realistic. Personally I like both but often do wonder if my art style works better with more realistic proportions.

The window looked a bit too simple and empty so I decided to use the skill I learned from painting Momochi a while ago and add some raindrops. I think it’s a nice touch.

By the end I decided to make the painting into a sequence.

Here is the process:

Android 18 sitting on the floor

Surprisingly, I have amassed a good number of paintings that are ready to be uploaded. But I think it’s best to have too many rather than falling behind. Although I should start working on paintings that take place in Autumn and Halloween before October ends up passing me by. Specially since I will participate in Inktober again this year.

This idea of Android 18 has finally been brought to completion. It was sitting on my do list for at least 1 or 2 years. Painting with red hues and still having her stand out properly was somehow a bit tricky. But I learned a few things doing this painting. I wonder how I will end up going about it next time I work with these hues.

Strawhats in Mexico

Attached will also be the process:

This painting is quite rough as it was a spur of the moment to celebrate Mexico’s Independence and the fact that Luffy is Mexican in the live action One Piece. Couple that with Luffy representing freedom and I think this quite fits.

I was planning to just have Luffy and Nami due to the lack of time today. But as a placeholder I titled it “Strawhats in Mexico” and the painting itself looked quite empty as well. So I ended up cramming as many of the Strawhats as I could. Sadly I didn’t have enough room for Jinbei.

You know, Robin was actually dressed like a singer of Grupero music when she was Miss All Sunday. So I thought I would bring that back.

Hope you guys have a great day and weekend.

Kurapika’s Resolve

I need to catch up the where the manga is currently at. But the last time I was reading we were barely heading to the dark continent. I really like his suit look so I wanted to do a piece with it. Although I also like his traditional outfit. Perhaps I will do a future piece of him wearing it.

For this painting I wanted to practice with a blue setting thus choosing a cityscape at night. There are different ways I could have gone at it, but I ended up going with these colors. I’ll need to study more paintings so that it can become more natural for me. I made two versions, the normal painted version and another with lighting effects in both the silhouette being illuminated by the window and his scarlet eyes glowing.

Cafe Background

Summer is almost over, finally. It’s time for cozy artwork. This background did take me a while. Especially so because I had to plan out the dimensions and furnishings. I would say planning it out took the longest. Despite the large amount of details, such as the bread, once I had it all planned out it moved along quite smoothly.

Zoro Santoryu RE;do

The first version I painted back in 2021, so two years ago. I felt it was time I gave it another chance. You can see it here:

2021 version

Here are some pictures of part of the process to start over:

The main idea and composition was there, but I decided to change the background and modify Zoro’s pose a bit lower to the ground. While I was painting this, I was once again re reading the Wano arc. So I decided to use the corresponding outfit. I also changed Shusui to Enma.

In this version of the painting I wanted to play around with the lighting which is why I made two versions, one with light beams on a separate layer and one with my original painting only. I was a bit worried about Zoro’s hair, but I think I made a good balance between how much detail I decided to paint and how much I decided to blend together.

As a side note, I really enjoyed the live action adaptation of One Piece. I really hope they continue making the series. Because of it, I got my dad to get interested in the series and now he’s watching the anime. Now if only my youngest brother would only give it a chance.

Dragon Ball City Background

This will be a background for a drawing I did a couple of weeks ago. I wasn’t too sure what I wanted for the background but decided upon this one. I really like the way Dragon Ball makes their landscapes and backgrounds so I tried to emulate that.

Iko Chan Salute

Iko chan has finally been painted. I was thinking of doing a flatter anime style but I noticed that It was a real pain going from layer to layer so that I could control the shadows and the lighting. Then there’s the limitation of staying within the line art which I find to be quite bothersome. I just prefer to paint on one layer per dimension. So when I just started painting, it felt more comfortable and intuitive. Luckily someone uploaded three of the Iko chan movies to the internet archive. This really helped in getting more details of Iko’s uniform. It was during this time that I noticed both smiley faces. They are a good accent to the look.

For the background it might be cool to add some early computer visuals… but we’ll see at a future date.

Bamboo Forest Background

This is actually the background for a RE:do piece. It has changed quite a bit from my original try. I wonder if anyone will know what I’m remaking?
