"A Hopeless Dream Chaser"

To me, one of the most influential pieces of media since I was a kid was Dragon Ball (specifically the original Dragon Ball). Even now I love going back to both the manga and the anime. It always lifts my spirits and inspires me in the sense of wonder, spirit/motivation and also as an artist. It’s always great meeting others with like interests. And I could see all the influences of pop culture that I also enjoy. This being popular action movies from Hollywood (such as Terminator, Alien). But my interest has always been Hong Kong martial arts movies, specially those by Jackie Chan. Seeing homages to that was always a great treat, making enjoying Dragon Ball even more fun. Akira Toriyama’s legacy will always live on and will continue to influence more people in the times to come. Thank you for guiding us in this amazing adventure.

I’ve been told about Chainsaw Man quite a while ago, but it wasn’t till not that long ago that I finally started reading the manga. Personally I prefer the second part more with Asa Mitaka. Having said that, Kobeni is definitely one of my favorite characters. Hope she makes a comeback at some point. With the fan theories out there, that just might happen.

This background is to recreate a scene that I really like from an anime that I just started watching. But just copying the scene would be no good, so I decided to at least change the vantage point. With that said, I have seen landscape paintings that are done in a cube or in a cross section. I really like the aesthetics of it, so I decided to give it a try for this one. It was actually pretty fun to paint.

I wonder how long it has been waiting to be uploaded? I just had a full day of snowing yesterday so I think it’s appropriate to upload a Wintery painting before we enter Spring. It was weird painting with Krita from Corel Painter. But for a free program it’s awesome. After playing around with the settings though it felt a lot better. But I guess for my painting style I’m just too used to Corel.
I’m so glad Airi has been very successful once she went solo. It’s always great when a new song or acting project comes out. There are so many Airi paintings I hope to make.

My brother first told me about the passing of Akira Toriyama yesterday. I didn’t have time to process that till I came back from my other job today. Seeing videos of other Dragon Ball fans around the world and also listening to Oda Eichiro’s words regarding his passing seriously made me tear up. He is a great inspiration both in art and also in what I believe to be his best and most influential story, the original Dragon Ball. It is one of those series that I love going back to. Both to re read and also to learn through his art style. Akira Toriyama and Goku are both inspirational to me and have seriously helped push me forward in hard times throughout life. I remember making friends and having lots of fun talking about Dragon Ball, or pretending to be characters from the series.
This last Christmas my brothers gifted me the manga box set of Dragon Ball and it almost made me tear up in front of my family. I will always remember the happiness and inspiration that Akira has brought me and the world.
Thank you for everything. Rest in power Akira Toriyama.

Today is Momochi’s birthday. To celebrate that, here is a painting of her. I first did a drawing of it back for Inktober 2023 day 17.
You can see it here:
I debated whether to keep the line art or not. And it clearly became clear that with this style of painting, it wouldn’t work. Obviously remnants of the line art are still present but I eliminated them where necessary. I wanted to play with values and also soft colors. Despite being finished a while ago, I still like the way it turned out. It will be a good style to play around with.

I can’t believe that this painting has been waiting for weeks now. Seems it’s been ready to go since January 4th. I tried making the straight line by hand but of course they were really off. So I used the rectangle tool to guide me for the hard lines and softened areas as needed. Looking at it now, I would probably play with the colors a bit. But I might come back to it at a later date. Overall though I like it.
